Bangkok's Tallest Building -- Mahanakhon

Not everybody is thrilled with this tower, but if the project goes through, this will be Bangkok's tallest structure within a few years. World Architecture News has the details.

Super sized tower will be Bangkok's tallest

Construction is set to start on MahaNakhon, a 77 storey urban oasis set to become Bangkok’s tallest building. Having recently completed Beijing’s CCTV Tower, widely considered among the world’s most imaginative contemporary architectural feats, acclaimed German architect Ole Scheeren, Partner, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has conceived his first skyscraper: MahaNakhon. The dazzling, pixelated 77-storey tower will be the tallest building in Thailand’s capital, home to a lush urban oasis with public gardens and a major transportation hub, luxury retail, residences, a new public square, and a five-star hotel created by New York’s Ian Schrager.

The top of the 1.6 million sq ft project MahaNakhon tower houses a three-floor Sky Bar and restaurant with dramatic double-height spaces and a rooftop outdoor bar with 360° views of the skyline and river, floating 310 meters above the city.

MahaNakhon translated as ‘great metropolis’ dismantles the typical tower and podium typology to render not a tower in isolation but instead a skyscraper that melds with the city by gradually ‘dissolving’ the mass as it moves vertically between ground and sky.

Its glittering stacked surfaces, terraces and protrusions will simultaneously create the impression of digital pixelation and echo the irregularity of ancient mountain topography whilst producing unparalleled views across the city.

The tower is scheduled to complete in 2012.

Karaoke Club in Korat

I recently added Big Baby Kenny to my Bloglines RSS Reader. His photos and karaoke story from Korat is here.

The Royal is a karaoke in central Korat.

It is actually sort of a rip off joint. The standard pricing for Karaoke in rural Issan seems to be 100 THB per hour for the girls, 100 THB per hour for the room, 500 THB for a bottle of 100 Pipers whiskey, and 40 THB for mixers.

The Royal charges 200 THB for the girls and tried to pad the bill with imaginary mixers the night my friend and I visited—surprising policies when they are dealing with knowledgeable locals and rely on repeat business.

The prices quoted and the bill padding might have been because we looked like out of towners–after all the prices are never written down at these places and they can make up prices when what look like easy marks come along.

Generally speaking the karaoke’s which are not for Japanese are a bad deal in Bangkok. The pricing makes them pretty expensive compared to the alternatives and there are lots of opportunities for skulduggery on the part of management.

In rural, Issan most of the karaoke’s seem to be legit and at 100 THB per hour for the girls are affordable and seem accessible.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Hidden in the alleyways behind Jakarta's fancy malls and in between the high-rise apartment buildings is what Ronny Poluan, a former film maker, calls the "real Jakarta."

Ronny Poluan (in cap), who runs "Jakarta Hidden Tours," takes a group through a Jakarta slum. It is not far from the glitz and glam that dominates the capital's skyline, yet it is a side of the city that few foreigners ever see. "I want them to (have an) authentic view," Poluan, who runs "Jakarta Hidden Tours," said as he took a group of Australians through the winding maze of a central Jakarta slum.

"I'm running out of rice," an old lady mumbles in the doorway of her tiny dark home as the group passes by.

Further along, little girls push their faces into wire fencing, while another group of children draw 36-year-old Daniel Knott into a game of cards. Knott, a volunteer for various NGOs, and his wife, who works for AUSAID, live in Jakarta and have been to the slums before. But it is the first time their friends, Kerri Bell and her husband Phil Paschke, have been to Indonesia.

Knott said he felt it was important to bring the visiting couple here.

"I think Jakarta is a city of contrasts," he said. "There's a lot of shopping malls and kitschy stuff, but it's also a lot of normal people. And, it's fun to come and hang out with the locals, actually."

"It's fantastic," Kerri Bell said. "I've been in Asia once before and we didn't want to just gloss over the surface and see all the things you can see in a western country. It feels to me much more like the real Jakarta, to see what drives it. To see that is so much more valuable than coming and lying on the beach."

The tour first took them into a couple of cramped and sweltering soy bean cake and tofu factories --- both staples in the Indonesian diet. The group remarked that there were few other cities where foreigners can wander around the slums, and not just feel safe but welcomed -- and that is what Poluan said these tours were all about.

"I want to see people meet people," he said. "The other culture meet the other culture."

"It's a pretty big eye opener," Paschke said. "It's the first time I have left Australia, so yes, it's completely different."

Poluan ushered the group into a covered market where you can find just about anything. For the group, it was a bombardment of the senses. "I love seeing them," fish seller Rokayah said, laughing. "They are handsome and they are rich. It is rare for me to see foreigners here at the traditional market, and I like talking to them, but I don't understand English."

The tour costs around $34 per person. Poluan keeps about half of the money for himself and his NGO, INTERKULTUR. The other half goes to the community.

Critics, however, said that this type of direct cash aid was counter-productive. They said the tours were demeaning, exploited the poor, and taught them to be dependent on the handouts of others. "These poor people, we have to educate them," said Wardah Hafidz, coordinator of the Urban Poor Consortium. "We have to tell them that it's not God's will that they are poor, that they also have to fight for themselves. They can't depend on other people forever."

This type of criticism angers and frustrates Poluan, who said his tours were about raising awareness on both sides. In the last month, he has also started a microfinance scheme. More importantly though, he said, were the initiatives that he hoped his tours would jumpstart. "They (the foreigners) usually think about how to help, to educate," he said. "They come back again, bring books. I try to make a pushcart library for the children." He said his tours were also about educating foreigners on real issues facing the country.

The group weaved its way to the city's train tracks, only barely visible amid the garbage and squalor. It is the site of a constant battle between the track dwellers and the government, which says that living there is illegal and dangerous. Government evictions and the destruction of the feeble structures, usually just bits of plastic tarp and wood, are fairly commonplace.

"I am used to it," shrugged 80-year-old Indarjo. He has lived like this for five decades, making his living as a scavenger. He said he has been forced to move over 200 times. He invited the group into his home, and explained that when it rains, he just pulls the flap over. "I feel that I am equal to them. I treat them as my guests," he said. "I believe that they would do the same for me."

The visitors were dumbstruck, the impact of what they were seeing, they say, was hard to put into words.

It was a sobering but educational look at Indonesia, where some 40 million people live below the poverty line. "It's pretty confronting," Paschke said. "The things you complain about at home don't seem too significant."

"It's hard to see something like this and just go home to normal life," his wife, Bell, added as the couple stood in the middle of the tracks. "It makes me motivated to look at the local community and things that we can help out with at home."

The NFL season is fast approaching...it will be Week 1 before we know it...but the media is taking some of the excitement away from the upcoming season because of their nauseating coverage of Brett Favre and Michael Vick...there are over 1,400 players in the NFL and all we have to hear about every stinking day is of an old broken down drama queen and a criminal who butchered dogs...

Brett Favre made an ass out of Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress...if Childress had any onions, he would have told Favre, back in May, that he needed a decision by Memorial Day, if not, the Vikings would move on...Childress had a responsibility to lead this team, instead, Favre made Childress his bitch...

Did Childress really think that Favre was going to lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl?...Childress was trying to hire a name - Brett Favre...that's all it was...the name was not going to take the Vikings to the Super Bowl...in fact, when was the last time Brett Favre led his team to the Super Bowl?...try 1998!!!...

Childress should have tried to sign freaking Joe Willie Namath or Joe Montana...I hope the Vikings tank this season and Childress gets fired....if it wasn't so close to the start of the season, the owner should can him now...

सुनील शेट्टी के एयरपोर्ट पर कपडे चोरी

दक्षिण अफ्रीका के डरबन में इन दिनों शूटिंग कर रहें बॉलीवुड अभिनेता सुनील शेट्टी ने अपनी पोशाक चोरी होने का दावा करते हुए आरोप लगया कि हो सकता है कि हवाई अड्डा कर्मियों की मिली भगत से इस घटना को अंजाम दिया गया है। शेट्टी के इस आरोप ने एयरपोट्र्स कंपनी ऑफ साऊथ अफ्रीका (एसीएसए) को बैचेन कर डाला है।

शेट्टी ने बताया कि दक्षिण अफ्रीका में दूसरी बार उनके साथ ऎसी घटना हुई है। उन्होंने कहा कि इसके बावजूद वह यहां लौटकर आएंगे क्योकि हवाई अड्डे पर सामान की देखरेख करने वालों को पता होता है कि उनमें क्या है और 10 मिनट में ही ताले खुल भी जाते है। हवाई आ अघिकारियों का कहना है कि शेट्टी को इस बारे में कम से कम एयरलाइन को सूचित करना चाहिए था। हवाई अड्डे पर मौजूद पुलिस को शिकायत दर्ज करानी चाहिए थी।

मल्टीप्लेक्स में विवादों चलते एक के बाद एक नई-नई फिल्मे रिलीज हो रही है। इनमें से कुछ फिल्में बाक्स ऑफिस पर धमाल मचा रही है तो कुछ रेंगती नजर आ रही है। इसी बीच में बर्मावाला ब्रदर्स बैनर अपनी नई फिल्म लाईफ पार्टनर को लेकर मैदान में उतरे है। इस फिल्म के निर्माता अब्बास बर्मावाला, मस्ताना बर्मावाला, हुसैन बर्मावाला है।

यह कहानी तीन दोस्तों करण (फरदीन खान), भावेश(तुषार कपूर), जीत(गोविंदा) पर आधारित है जिनके विचार शादी को लेकर भिन्न भिन्न है। करण(फरदीन खान), संजना(जेनिलिया डिसूजा) को बहुत पंसद करता है। वह दोनों एक दूसरे से शादी भी करना चाहते है। क्या लव मैरिज के जरिये शादी करना उचित है। भावेश(तुषार कपूर) के घरवालों ने उसके लिए लडकी पंसद की है। क्या यह लाईफ पाटर्नर उसके लिए ठीक होगी। जीत(गोविंदा) लव मैरिज और अरेंज मैरिज दोनों के खिलाफ है। वह एक वकील की भूमिका निभा रहे है। और तलाक मे मामले को देखते है।

प्रियंका ने शाहिद को स्कूटर से गिराया

अभिनेता शाहिद कपूर को फिल्म "कमीने" की शूटिंग के दौरान स्कूटर पर बैठना पडा। शाहिद का अनुभव अच्छा नही रहा और उन्हें स्कूटर चला रहे व्यक्ति ने गिरा दिया। यूनिट के लोगों से हंसी नही रूक रही थी। यह देखकर भी शाहिद को उस इंसान पर बिलकुल भी गुस्सा नही आया, जो स्कूटर चला रहा था।

आखिर यह काम खूबसूरत प्रियंका चोपडा जो कर रही थी। प्रियंका के लिए शाहिद एक तो क्या दस बार स्कूटर से गिरने के लिए तैयार हो जाएं। यूनिट के एक सदस्य ने बताया कि सीन के मुताबिक प्रियंका को सिर्फ 15 मीटर स्कूटर चलाना था और शाहिद को पीछे बैठना था। यह बडा आसान शॉट लग रहा था, लेकिन फिल्माने में लंबा समय लगा। जैसे ही निर्देशक ने एक्शन बोला, स्कूटर का एड करने वाली प्रियंका ने स्कूटर चलाया। वे संतुलन नही बना सकी और स्कूटर के साथ शाहिद और प्रियंका गिर गए। रफ्तार घीमी थी, इसलिए दोनों को चोट नही आई। दोनों स्टार्स को इस हालत में देख सभी ठहाके लगाकर हंसने लगे।

बॉलीवुड किंग खान यानी शाहरूख खान एक बार फिर पिता बनने को तैयार है। खबर है कि करन जौहर की फिल्म "माई नेम इज खान" में किंग शाहरूख खान एक किशोर लडके के पिता की भूमिका में नजर आयेगे। शाहरूख खान अपनी लव ब्वॉय इमेज को छोडकर अब पिता की भूमिका कर रहे है।

There are many annoying baseball announcers...the first that comes to mind is the New York Yankees John Sterling with his "Yankees Win...thaaaaaaaaaaaa Yankees Win"...the Chicago White Sox play-by-play man Hawk Harrelson gets under my skin with his "He gone" call after a White Sox pitcher strikes out a batter...but the most annoying and worst baseball announcer in the sport is the Cleveland Indians Tom Hamilton...

Hamilton calls every Indians homerun like it is a World Series clinching blast...Ryan Garko can hit a solo shot in the first inning and Hamilton will be screaming and yelling...as a kid I used to listen to Herb Score call the Indians games...Score was not perfect as he made many errors in calling the game...but at least he was professional and did not act like every homerun was the "mother of all homers"...this weekend the Tribe is honoring Hamilton as fans will be receiving a Tom Hamilton bobblehead...the Indians will then have fireworks after the game with a replay of Hamilton's greatest play-by-plays...if anyone gets one of those bobbleheads, please send it to be so I can bust it into pieces...

These announcers need to take a lesson from Los Angeles Dodgers great Vin Scully...Scully is the best baseball announcer ever...he was praised by the media for his call on Manny Ramirez's pinch-hit grand slam last week...check it out:

बिल्ली ने ऑस्कर विनिंग फिल्म "टाइटैनिक" में विलन का रोल किया था। इसके अलावा फिल्स ठाकरे ने प्रड्यूस किया है और इस डेविस सिल्वरमैन डायरेक्ट करेंगे। बिपाशा के कई मायने में यह रोल चैलेंजिग है। पहला तो यह जोली जैसा रोल करने वाली है। इसलिए उन्हें उसी रूप में देखा जाएगा। इसके अलावा इंटरनेशनल ऎक्टर और डायरेक्टर के साथ भी वह काम कर रही है। इस फिल्म की प्लांनिग काफी पहले हो चुकी थी, लेकिन आघिकारियों घोषणा नहीं की गई थी।

अपने स्टाइल व लुक के लिए प्रसिद्धि फिरोज खान का सपना उनके बेटे फरदीन खान पूरा करने वाले है। इन दिनों फरदीन सुपरहिट फिल्म "कुर्बानी" का रीमेक बनाने की सोच रहे है। खबर है कि दिवंगत अभिनेता फिरोज खान अपनी 80 के दशक की फिल्म "कुर्बानी" का रीमेक बनाना चाहते थे और अब यह सपना उनका बेटा फरदीन खान पूरा करने की सोच रहा है। उस समय की सुपरहिट फिल्म "कुर्बानी" के मुख्य नायक फिरोज खान के साथ विनोद खन्ना व अभिनेत्री जीतन अमान थी। उस समय के बेहतरीन खलनायक का रोल करने वाले अमजद खान ने भी इसमें अभिनय किया था। जबकि रीमेक फिल्म "कुर्बानी" में अभिनय के लिए फरदीन खान के साथ बेबो के ब्वाय फै्रड सैफ अली खान व अमजद खान की भूमिका संजय दत्त करेगे। अब देखना है कि हॉट गर्ल में किस अभिनेत्री को लेते है।

"लक" का लक खराब

समीक्षा: सोहम शाह की फिल्म "लक" एक इंसान के भाग्य पर आघारित है। जिसमें इंसान के आसपास कई समस्याएं घिरी होती है, और दो इंसान एक-दूसरे के लिए समस्याएं पैदा करता है। फिल्म में मानव की सही जीवन शैली को दिखाने की कोशिश की गई है। "लक" भी "घूम" की तरह थोडी पकाऊ है, लेकिन हर बार देखने पर मजा भी आएगा। जिस तरह टीवी पर "बिग बॉस" नुमा कुछ रियलिटी शो दिखाए जाते है जिनमें लोगों को टॉस्क दिए जाते है और कौन शो में रहेगा और कौन नही, इसका फैसला दर्शक करते है, उसी तरह का शो लक फिल्म का मूसा भी आयोजित करता है। फर्क इतना है कि उसके खेल में भाग लेने वाले एक-एक कर मारे जाते है, और जो भाग्यशाली होते है, वो बच जाते है। मूसा "लक" का व्यापार करता है और भाग्यशाली लोगों को वो उठाकर अपने खेल का हिस्सा बना लेता है। लोग इस बात पर पैसा लगाते है कि कौन जिंदा बचेगा।

मूसा लोगों की किस्मत से तरह-तरह से खेलता है। हेलिकॉप्टर में वह सभी को बैठा कर हजारों फीट ऊपर ले जाता है और कूदने को कहता है। तीन पैराशूट ऎसे है, जो खुलेंगे नही। बदकिस्मत मारे जाते है, और किस्मत वाले बच जाते है। जो बचे वे अगले रांउड में फिर जिंदगी और मौत के खेल मे अपना "लक" आजमाते है।
निर्देशक और लेखक सोहम की कहानी का मूल विचार अच्छा है। उसमें नयापन है। वे टीवी पर दिखाने वाले शो को फिल्म में ले आए और उसे लार्जर देन लाइफ का रूप दे दिया, लेकिन कहानी का वे ठीक से विस्तार नही कर पाएं वरना एक अच्छी फिल्म बनाई जा सकती थी। ट्रेन सीक्वेंस के साथ फिल्म की बेहतरीन शुरूआत होती है।

नए-नए किरदार कहानी में जुडते जाते है और कहानी आगे बढती है। उम्मीद बंघती है कि एक अच्छी फिल्म देखने को मिलेगी, लेकिन जल्दी ही फिल्म अपनी दिशा खो बैठती है। मूसा इन लोगों के साथ जिंदगी और मौत के जो खेल खेलता है, वो दिलचस्प नही है कि दर्शकों को बांघकर रखे। एकरसता होने की वजह से फिल्म ठहरी हुई लगती है।
रोमांस और इमोशन पैदा करने की कोशिश की गई है, लेकिन वो जबरदस्ती ठूंसे हुए और बनावटी लगते है। फिल्म का अंत भी हास्यास्पद है। मूसा की अंतिम चुनौती में विजयी होकर राम (इमरान खान) 20 करोड रूपए जीत जाता है। इसके बावजूद वो मूसा के साथ एक और खेल खेलता है। क्यों इसका कोई जवाब नही है। दोनों एक-दूसरे को गोली मार देते है। इसके बाद अस्पताल वाले दृश्य देखकर लेखकों की अक्ल पर हंसी आती है। श्रुति हासन के डबल रोल वाली बात का कोई मतलब नही है। फिल्म में थोडा भ्रम है, लेकिन इतने अभिनेता होने से फिल्म मे रोमांच होना स्वाभाविक है।
फिल्म "लक" के डायलॉग बेहतरीन है। इसके एक संवाद "मुझे पैसों की नही, तुझ जैसों की जरूरत है और मैं खरीदता नही, सिर्फ भाडे पर लेता हूं" ने पूरी फिल्म में जान डाल दी है।

ब्रिटिश फर्टिलिटी सोसायटी के सेक्रटरी पासी कहते है कि सेक्स वैसा ही वाइल्ड और थ्रिलिंग होना चाहिए, जैसा आप पहली बार मिलने पर कर रहे थे और बच्चो के बारे में नहीं सोच रहे थे। आमतौर पर इंटरकोर्स के दौरान 25 करोड स्पम्र्स पैदा होते है। लेकिन एक रिसर्च के मुताबिक जब पुरूष सेक्स में पूरी तरह संतुष्ट होता है, तो स्पम्र्स की संख्या 50 फीसदी तक बढ जाती है। पासी बताते है कि अगर आप सेक्स को रूटीन से पांच मिनट ज्यादा लंबा खीचते है, तो स्पम्र्स की संख्या ढाई करोड तक बढ सकती है।
