Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year goes to . . . Tim Tebow?

The annual Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year will be announced this week...unlike in some year's there are at least six worthy candidates for this high honor...last year Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was a hands-down unanimous choice for the honor -- well at least until he later got photographed smoking pot from a bong...

Anyway, here are my top five athletes who should be considered for the Sportsman of the Year....

5. Peyton Manning - over the last year Manning is the reigning NFL MVP and he has led his team to a perfect season so far...his career is deserving of an honor such as this...but I believe he will be passed over for now...eventually he will win this award...

4. Mariano Rivera - there is no way Mo will get this honor because he is someone who does not like the spotlight...but he has been the one constant for the New York Yankees from 1996 through 2009...without Rivera, the Yankees would not have won 5 World Series titles...and even at the age of 40, he showed once again this post-season why he is the most important player on the Yankees...

3. Jimmie Johnson - I know nothing about auto racing...but even I know it take someone special to win a title four times in a row...Johnson is probably the most deserving, but I don't see it happened just because he is with auto racing...

2. Roger Federer - this dude should have been the Sportsman of the Year already...he is the most dominant tennis player ever...this past year he finally won the French Open and once again reclaimed th Wimbledon title...he finished the year ranked number 1...his biggest drawback is that he is not American...if Federer was American, he would be more recognized for his greatness...

1. Tim Tebow - I think Tebow will be the 2009 Sportsman of the Year...I know that many people hate this kid...but the fact remains, he is a winner at the college football level...plus, he seems like the "real deal" off the field...sure it is easy to bash Tebow, but I would want his to be the QB on my college team...he epitomizes everything that is good with college sports...Tebow may be a flop in the NFL, but no one can take away his greatness at the college level...that piece of history is secure...

हॉलीवुड की रॉक स्टार कर्टनी लव ने एक सनसनीखेज खुलासे के तहत दावा किया हैं कि पॉप स्टार ब्रिटनी स्पीयर्स अपने पिता जेमी के यौन शोषण का शिकार हुई थीं।
टि्वटर का दामन छोड चुकी 45 साल की कर्टनी ने फेसबुक पर एक पोस्ट में लिखा है कि उनके पास इस बात की पुख्ता जानकारी है कि ब्रिटनी के पिता ने उनका शोषण किया था। लव ने फेसबुक पर लिखा है कि ब्रिटनी के पिता ने उनका शोषण किया था। वह कहती है कि ब्रिटनी के पिता हर राज अपनी वासना की भूख मिटाने के लिए उस पर दबाव डाला करते थे। हालांकि, लव ब्रिटनी की इस बात के लिए तारीफ करती हैं कि उन्होंने कभी भी सहानुभूति पाने के लिए इस बात का खुलासा नहीं किया।

उन्होंने बताया कि राजकुमार हीरानी ने मुझसे कहा कि फिल्म में मेरे चरित्र रांको की तरह ही मैं एक इडियट हूं और मैं उनकी बात से सहमत हूं। मैंने अपनी जिंदगी में कुछ इसी प्रकार के निर्णय लिए हैं। मैं यह अनुभव करता हूं कि मैं बॉलीवुड का एक इडियट हूं। उन्होंने कहा, मैंने 12वीं कक्षा की पढाई खत्म करने के बाद सहायक निर्देशक के तौर पर काम शुरू किया था। इसलिए मैं कॉलेज की जिंदगी का मजा नहीं उठा सका। जब मैंने कॉलेज परिसर में फिल्म की शूटिंग की तब मुझे पता चला कि मैं जिंदगी में छात्र जीवन के अनुभव से महरूम रह गया।

शिल्पा के रिसेप्शन में लगा सितारों का जमावडा

बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री शिल्पा शेट्टी की आलीशान शादी के बाद मंगलवार रात हुई रिसेप्शन पार्टी में उन्हें आर्शीवाद देने के लिए सितारों का जमावडा देखा गया। इसमें सदी के महानायक अमिताभ बच्चन, शाहरूख खान और ऋतिक रोशन आदि प्रमुख रूप से मौजूद रहे। रविवार को चुनिंदा लोगों की उपस्थिति में हुए शादी समारोह के बाद मंगलवार रात कलीना स्थित ग्रैंड हयात होटल में एक भव्य समारोह में शिल्पा ने अपनी शादी का रिसेप्शन दिया। इस समारोह के लिए शिल्पा तरूण ताहिलियानी द्वारा तैयार की गई एक सुनहरी पोशाक में दिखाई दे रहीं थीं, वहीं उनके पति राज कुंद्रा काली शेरवानी में थे।
कार्यक्रम स्थल पर जाने से पहले शिल्पा ने कहा कि मैं काफी मस्ती करने की सोच रही हूं और इस यादगार लम्हें को अपने दोस्तों के साथ बांटना चाहती हूं। इस कार्यक्रम में बिग बी अपनी पुत्रवधू ऎश्वर्या के साथ आए, तो ऋतिक रोशन अपनी पत्नी सुजैन और शाहरूख अपनी पत्नी गौरी के साथ दिखाई दिए। फिल्म निर्माता फराह खान ने कहा कि वे मेरी बहुत अच्छी दोस्त हैं, हम "झलक दिखला जा" में साथ में जज बने थे और "ओम शांति ओम" में साथ थे। मैं उनकी शादी होने से काफी खुश हूं। इस मौके पर रेखा, जयाप्रदा, कादर खान, करण जौहर, कंगना राणावत, जायद खान, फरदीन खान, सुनील शेट्टी, गोविंदा, सुनिधि चौहान और मधुर भंडारकर आदि भी उपस्थित थे।

One of the least talked about stories in college football this season is the remarkable record of the Temple Owls...yes, those Temple Owls...the same football program that was tossed out of the Big East a few years back because they were dragging down the conference's reputation...

The Owls now stand at 9-2 and the leader in the Mid-American Conference...Temple started the season 0-2 - losing to I-AA Villanova and Penn State...since those losses, they have reeled off nine straight includings a 27-24 win over Navy...

The leader in this monumental turnaround is head coach Al Golden (photo, left)...Golden, who is rumored to be the leading candidate as the next coach at Virginia, is a graduate of Penn State...in four years at Temple, he has posted an 18-28 mark...

Golden was a three-year starter at tight end at Penn State...he spent one season withe the New England Patriots...he started his coaching career as the offensive coordinator at Red Bank (NJ) Catholic High...Golden has ties to Virginia as he served as a graduate assistant and assistant coach under George Welsh and Al Groh...while at Virginia, Golden coached the defense and eventually became the defensive coordinator...

Helping Golden with Temple's climb to the top is stud running back Bernard Pierce... a bruising type of running back, Pierce will miss this week's game against Ohio University after sustaining a shoulder injury in Saturday's game against Kent State...

Pierce is a 6'0", 220 lb freshman who racked up 1,308 yards and 15 touchdowns before his injury...Pierce is a true workhorse as he carried the ball 40 times in a game twice this year...he also rushed for over 200 yards against Navy (267 yards) and Toledo (212 yards)...the most impressive stat - he has not fumbled this season...

पीपुल पत्रिका के अनुसार, "वेटिंग फॉर टुनाइट" से मशहूर 40 वषीय लोपेज ने इस गिरने के बारे में कहा कि यह कोरियोग्राफी में पहले से ही तय था। रियान सीक्रेस्ट के रेडियो शो में उनका काफी मजाक उडाया गया था।
लोपेज ने कहा कि यह मेरी कोरियाग्राफी का हिस्सा था। हालांकि उन्होने यह कहकर विरोधाभास पैदा कर दिया कि वह तुरंत खडी हो गई। गौरतलब है कि लोपेज के शो के दौरान गिरने से उनकी पीठ में चोट आ गई थीं।

22 जनवरी को प्रदर्शित होगी वीर

बॉलीवुड अभिनेता सलमान खान द्वारा अभिनीत 1875 की पृष्ठभूमि पर बनी प्रेम कहानी "वीर" 22 जनवरी को प्रदर्शित होगी। सलमान ने पिंडारी के सैनिकों के शोषण पर फिल्म बनाने की कल्पना 20 वर्ष पूर्व की थीं। सलमान ने इसके लिए अपनी बॉडी को बहुत संवारा हैं।
सलमान ने अपने ब्लॉग पर लिखा है मैंने 20 साल पूर्व "वीर" के बारे में सोचा था। इसे मेरी सबसे ज्यादा प्रतीक्षित फिल्म कहा जा सकता हैं। मैं 1990 में जब "बागी" की शूटिंग कर रहा था, तब मैंने इसकी कहानी लिखी थीं। अभिनेता ने कहा कि वह पहले निर्देशक बनना चाहते थे, लेकिन किस्मत शायद अभिनेता बनने की थीं, लेकिन उन्होंने इस विचार को नहीं छोडा।
सलमान ने लिखा है 1875 की पृष्ठभूमि पर बनी फिल्म एक सैनिक वीर की प्रेम कथा हैं। वीर निडर पिंडारी सैनिकों के वंश का एक युवक हैं। सलमान की प्रेमिका के रूप में नवोदित अभिनेत्री जरीन खान दिखाई देंगी। फिल्म में मिथुन चक्रवर्ती, जैकी श्रॉफ और सोहेल खान ने भी भूमिकाएं निभाई हैं।

लंदन ड्रीम्स के नहीं चलने का दुख नहीं: असिन

फिल्म "गजनी" से हिंदी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में धमाल मचाने वाली असिन की पिछली फिल्म "लंदन ड्रीम्स" बॉक्स ऑफिस पर कुछ खास नहीं कर पाई, बावजूद इसके उन्हें कोई दुख नहीं हैं। उन्हें फिल्म के न चलने का थोडा सा दुख हैं, लेकिन अपने फैसले पर पछतावा नहीं हैं कि उन्होंने इस फिल्म में क्यों काम किया... दरअसल, असिन के दुख पर सलमान खान और अजय देवगन के साथ काम करने की खुशी भारी पड गई।
बॉलीवुड में उनकी शुरूआत ही मिस्टर परफेक्शिनिस्ट आमिर खान के साथ हुई थीं, इसके बाद सलमान और अजय के साथ काम करना भी उनके लिए बहुत मायने रखता हैं। असिन ने साउथ इंडियन फिल्मों में भी कई बडे कलाकारों के साथ काम किया हैं, इसलिए अगर उनकी कोई फिल्म नहीं भी चलती हैं, तो भी वह इस बात से संतोष कर लेती हैं कि उन्हें इतने अच्छे लोगों के साथ काम करने का मौका तो मिला।

ईमानदार व्यक्ति है ओमपुरी: बिग बी

बॉलीवुड के महानायक अमिताभ बच्चन ने अपने समकालीन अभिनेता ओमपुरी की विवादास्पद जीवनी का विमोचन करने के बाद उन्हें ईमानदार व्यक्ति की संज्ञा दी हैं। किताब के विमोचन समारोह में पुरी ने अपने जीवन के बारे में बहुत सी बातों का जिक्र किया था। समारोह का विवरण देते हुए बिग बी ने अपने ब्लॉग पर लिखा है कि बहुत से दर्शकों का सामना करना सुविधाजनक स्थितियों में भी किसी के लिए भी कठिन काम हो सकता हैं, लेकिन ओम पुरी के बारे में मुझे कहना पडेगा कि यह उनके जीवन की सबसे साहस वाली शाम थीं।
"ओम पुरी: इन अनलाइकली हीरो" नाम की किताब उनकी पत्रकार पत्नी नंदिता पुरी ने लिखी हैं, जिसमें उनके कई महिलाओं के साथ संबंधों के बारे में जिक्र हैं। बिग बी ने लिखा है, अपनी जिंदगी के बारे में ईमानदारी से बताते हुए ओमपुरी का गला रूंध गया, इतनी ईमानदारी, जो शायद हम में कभी न आ पाए। बिग बी ने इस बारे में भी मजाक किया कि वह मुंबई में सबसे लोकप्रिय किताब का विमोचन करने वाले बन गए हैं। अगले कुछ दिनों में अमिताभ अपने पिता हरिवंश राय बच्चान की नए रंग में पेश होने वाली किताब "मधुशाला" का भी विमोचन करने वाले हैं।

फिर एक साथ दिखेंगे सलमान-कैटरीना

बॉलीवुड अभिनेता सलमान खान और अभिनेत्री कैटरीना कैफ पर्दे पर फिर एक साथ रोमांस करते दिखेंगे। इस जोडी को इस बार कोई नामचीन निर्माता या निर्देशक नहीं, बल्कि सलमान के जीजा अतुल अगि्नहोत्री ला रहे हैं। अपनी फिल्म "हैलो" में सलमान-कैटरीना को मेहमान भूमिका में पेश कर चुके अतुल अब दोनों को केंद्र में रख कर फिल्म बनाने जा रहे हैं। फिल्म का निर्देशन वे खुद नहीं करेंगे।
यह जिम्मेदारी उन्होंने प्रेम सोनी का सौंपी हैं। वहीं सोनी, जिन्होंने फिल्म "मैं और मिसेज खन्ना" का निर्देशन किया हैं। बतौर निर्माता अतुल की यह दूसरी फिल्म होगी। इसकी शूटिंग अगले साल शुरू होगी। इससे पहले यह जोडी फिल्म "मैंने प्यार क्यों किया" और "युवराज" में दिखी थीं। "पार्टनर" और "हैलो" में उन्होंने एक-दूसरे के साथ काम तो किया था, लेकिन रोमांटिक जोडी के रूप में नहीं दिखे थे। लेेकिन इस फिल्म में यह जोडी रोमांस करती दिखेंगी।

गर्भवती महिला को निर्वस्त्र कर गांव में घुमाया

उत्तर प्रदेश के बिजनौर जिले में अपनी जमीन पर कब्जे का विरोध करने के कारण एक गर्भवती महिला को कुछ लोगौं ने बुरी तरह पीटा और बाद में उसे निर्वस्त्र कर पूरे गांव में घुमाया। इस सिलसिले में चार लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है। मानवता को शर्मसार करने वाली यह घटना जिले के धामपुर इलाके के करनावाला गांव की है जहां रविवार शाम गांव के ही कुछ लोगों ने 25 वर्षीय महिला के कपडे फाड डाले। फिर उसे सरेआम निर्वस्त्र क पूरे गावं में घुमाया गया। धामपुर थाना इंचर्ज राजेश कुमार गौतम ने बताया कि घटना में शामिल अन्य लोगों की गिरफ्तारी के लिए दबिश दी जा रही है।
राजेश कुमार ने बताया कि घटना मे पीडिता का गर्भपात भी हो गया है। जिला अस्पताल में महिला का इलाज कराया जा रहा है, जहां हालत अब खतरे से बाहर बताई जा रही है। पुलिस के अनुसार गांव के कुछ लोग पीडिता के पति को जमीन के एक टुकडे को हथियाना चाहते थे। रविवार को शाम को उन लोगों ने कब्जे की नीयत से जबरन उस जमीन पर कच्चाी कोठरी का निमार्ण शुरू कर दिया। उस दौरान घर में अकेली पीडिता ने जब इसका विरोध किया तो उन्होंने बाल खींचकर डंडो से उसकी पिटाई की, फिर कपडे फाडकर पूरे गांव में घुमाया।

Youngstown State will look at 2 Ohio State assistants for head coaching spot

Youngstown State University is looking for a new head football coach after Jon Heacock resigned on Sunday night...Heacock was hand picked by former YSU head coach Jim Tressel after left YSU to take the head coaching position at Ohio State...



With the Penguins in full search for a new head coach, expect the next leader of YSU football to be someone from the Tressel tree...the local media has thrown out a few names...but the two who I think will be considered are currently on the Ohio State coaching staff: Luke Fickell and Nick Siciliano...



Fickell (photo, top) is a graduate of Ohio State and serves as the team's co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach...Fickell has been on the Ohio State coaching staff since 2003...this past off-season, Fickell turned down an offer to serve on the coaching staff at Notre Dame...Fickell played his high school ball at Columbus DeSales...Fickell has been talked about as a future head coach at a BCS level program...the YSU job would give him the head coaching experience he needs...



Another candidate is Nick Siciliano (photo, bottom)...Siciliano has strong ties to the Youngstown area as he played his high school football at Austintown Fitch, the alma mater of current YSU athletic director Ron Strollo...Siciliano is a graduate of YSU...



He currently serves as the Buckeyes quarterback coach...prior to coming to Ohio State, he was an assistant coach at North Carolina A&T State...he also served as video coordinator for Bob Stoops as Oklahoma...Siciliano's biggest drawback is that he did not play college football and he has only been in the coaching business for a short time...



As far as Heacock goes, expect to see him with his brother serving as an assistant coach at Ohio State...

रविवार को किरण बावा के खंडाला स्थित बंगले में शानदार सेरेमनी में बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री शिल्पा शेट्टी ने लंदन के बिजनेसमैन राज कुंद्रा के साथ ब्याह रचाया। शिल्पा ने मंगलवार को मुंबई के फाइव स्टार होटल में रिसेप्शन का अरेंजमेंट किया हैं। इसमें बॉलीवुड और क्रिकेट जगत की बडी हस्तियों के शिरकत करने की संभावना हैं। दो साल पहले यूके के रियलिटी शो बिग ब्रदर से अचानक सुर्खियों में आई शिल्पा ने अपनी शादी में मीडिया से दूरिया बनाई रखी थीं। बॉलीवुड से भी गिने-चुने लोगों को ही बुलाया गया था, जिनमें सनी देओल, सुनील शेट्टी, जैकी भगनानी और वाशु भगनानी को इनवाइट किया था। शिल्पा ने डिजाइनर तरूण ताहिलयानी की डिजाइनर साडी पहनी थीं।
इस अवसर पर राज कुंद्रा ने भी सुर्ख लाल रंग की शेरवानी पहनीं थीं जिस पर सोने की नक्काशी की गई थीं। वह परंपरा के अनुसार अपने हाथ में तलवार लिए हुए थे। । शिल्पा की बहन और अभिनेत्री शमिता शेट्टी जो कि बिग बॉस के तीसरे संस्करण में हिस्सा ले रही थीं, इस शादी में शामिल होने के लिए स्वैच्छिक रूप से बाहर आ गई थीं। शादी से ठीक पहले आयोजित एक संगीत समारोह में कुंद्रा ने दिवंगत पॉप स्टार माइकल जैक्सन की नकल उतारकर सभी अतिथियों को चौका दिया। शिल्पा की नृत्य कला से दुनिया परिचित हैं लेकिन उनके भावी पति राज कुंद्रा भी किसी मायने में उनसे कम नहीं। किरण बावा ने कहा, कुंद्रा और शिल्पा ने शानदार नृत्य किया। शिल्पा ने जहां फिल्म "चांदनी" के गीत "मेरे हाथों में नौ-नौ चूडियां हैं.." पर नृत्य किया वहीं कुंद्रा ने जैक्सन के नृत्य की नकल उतारी। कुंद्रा का प्रदर्शन शानदार रहा।
शिल्पा के विवाह समारोह के दौरान आयोजित संगीत में कुंद्रा और शिल्पा के करीबी दोस्त और परिवार के लोग शामिल हुए। इस दौरान शिल्पा की बहन शमिता शेट्टी ने स्किट डांस के लिए उदीयमान फिल्म स्टार जैकी भगनानी को अपना जोडीदार बनाया। जैकी फिल्म निर्माता वासु भगनानी के पुत्र हैं। जैकी एक अच्छे नर्तक हैं। वह "कमीने" और "ओम शांति ओम" जैसी फिल्मों में नृत्य का प्रदर्शन कर चुके हैं। बॉलीवुड की अभिनेत्री होने के साथ-साथ शिल्पा इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग के दल राजस्थान रायल्स की सह मालकिन भी हैं और ब्रिटेन में एक फूड चेन की स्वामिनी हैं।
वर्ष 1993 में शिल्पा ने फिल्म बाजीगर से अपने फिल्मी करियर की शुरूआत की। शाहरूख इसमें अभिनेता थे। बाद में शिल्पा ने मैं खिलाडी तू अनाडी, धडकन और फिर मिलेंगे जैसी फिल्मों में काम किया। उनका बॉलीवुड फिल्मी कैरियर एक समय ढलान की ओर था तब रियलिटी शो बिग ब्रदर में उन्हें ऑफर मिला।

माइकल जैक्सन को मिले 4 म्यूजिक अवार्ड

दिवंगत पॉप स्टार माइकल जैक्सन और टेलर स्विफ्ट सितारों से सजे अमेरिकन म्यूजिक अवार्ड समारोह में सबसे ज्यादा पुरस्कार पाने वालों में रहे। लॉस एंजिल्स के नोकिया थिएटर में रविवार रात हुए इस समारोह में किंग ऑफ माइकल जैक्सन को 4 पुरस्कार मिले। "एमटीवी डॉट कॉम" की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार दिवंगत पॉप स्टार को पसंदीदा पुरूष कलाकार सोल, आर एंड बी और पसंदीदा पुरूष कलाकार पॉप, रॉक श्रेणी का पुरस्कार मिला। जैक्सन के पुरस्कार उनके भाई जर्मेन माइकल ने लिए।
जर्मेन उन दस्तानों को पहने थे जिन्हें माइकल जैक्सन पहना करते थे। जर्मेन ने जैक्सन को मिले अवार्ड पर खुशी जाहिर करते हुए कहा कि इसके लिए वे भगवान के शुक्रगुजार हैं, जैक्सन हमेशा लोगों के दिलों में रहेगा। उन्होंने इस मौके पर कहा कि इन पुरस्कार से भी अगर कुछ बढकर है तो वह है जैक्सन का संदेश। जिसमें उन्होंने कहा था कि "अच्छाई देखो, अच्छा करो, अच्छे बनो और सबसे प्यार करो"। टेलर स्विफ्ट ने वीडियों लिंक के जरिये लंदन में पुरस्कार ग्रहण किए।
टेलर लंदन में रिहर्सल में व्यस्त थीं। स्विफ्ट ने कहा कि माइकल जैक्सन जैसे महान गायक के साथ एक श्रेणी में नाम दर्ज होना ही उनके लिए गर्व की बात हैं। समारोह में लेडी गागा, रिहाना, एमिनेम, जेजैड, शकीरा आदि ने प्रस्तुतियां दी। लेडी गागा ने अपने नए वीडियों रोमांस पर प्रस्तुति दी। समारोह में विटनी ह्यूस्टन को इंटरनेशनल आर्टिस्ट ऑफ द ईयर का पुरस्कार मिला।

Michigan - another year, another losing season

This weekend I attended the Michigan-Ohio State game in Ann Arbor...I went solo because my 78-year-old father had an inner ear infection and could not go...and once again I came home pissed and disappointed...here are my thoughts about the game...

- Before the game I met NFL Pro Football Hall of Famer and Michigan great Dan Dierdorf in the tailgate lot (photo, above)...Dierdorf's legs are shot - the dude is basically crippled...he uses a cane and can barely walk...his hands are as big and thick as a catcher's mitt...

- Got the see Ohio State get off the team buses...ever the "gentleman" that he is, Jim Tressel made sure his wife, Ellen, was the first person off the bus...

- During pre-game I got to yell some obscenities to former Michigan, now Ohio State offensive lineman Justin Boren...I hardly ever yell crap at opposing players, but I could not resist with this fat pig...I still cannot comprehend how he spent two years wearing the Michigan uniform then transferred to Ohio State...I could understand if this was professional sports because it is a business and money dictates where a player plays...but this prick could have transferred to any other school in the nation, but he chose Michigan's hated rival...to me, Justin Boren has no soul...

फिल्म "पा" में बिग बी यानी अमिताभ बच्चन की मां की भूमिका निभाने वाली बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री विद्या बालन ने कहा कि अब वह सभी को गर्व से कह सकेंगी कि बिग बी उनके पहले बच्चे हैं।
बालन ने कहा, इस भूमिका को निभाने के बाद मैं गर्व से अपने बच्चों को कह सकूंगी कि बिग बी मेरे पहले बच्चे हैं। मैंने सपने में भी नहीं सोचा था कि मैं कभी बॉलीवुड के इस महान कलाकार की मां की भूमिका निभाऊंगी। उन्होंने कहा, बच्चनजी के साथ काम करने का बहुत ही बढिया अनुभव रहा। मेरे लिए यह एक विशेष फिल्म हैं। फिल्म "पा" में बालन और अभिषेक बच्चन की जोडी हैं। पिता-पुत्र के भावनात्मक संबंधों पर यह फिल्म आधारित हैं।

जैक्सन का दस्ताना पूर्वानुमानों से अधिक में नीलाम

किंग ऑफ पॉप माइकल जैक्सन के दस्ताने पूर्वानुमानों से कहीं अधिक साढे तीन लाख डॉलर जबकि उनके द्वारा वर्ष 1989 के वल्र्ड टूर के दौरान पहना गया जैकेट यहीं हुई नीलामी में दो लाख 25 हजार डालर में नीलाम हुई।
अमरीका के न्यूयॉर्क में हुई इस नीलामी में राक एन रोल से संबंधित कई ऎसी वस्तुओ की भी नीलामी की गई, जो जैक्सन से संबंधित नहीं थीं। इस नीलामी को कराने वाली कंपनी जूलियन आक्शन्स की मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी डैरेन जूलियन ने जैक्सन के इस दस्ताने को (जैक्सन का पवित्र पात्र) का नाम दिया था। उन्होंने कहा कि दस्ताने को करीब 50 हजार डालर में नीलाम होने का अनुमान लगाया गया था।
हालांकि जैक्सन के प्रशंसकों का मानना था कि यह दस्ताना अनुमानों से कहीं अधिक कीमत में नीलाम होगा। नीलामी कंपनी ने जैक्सन की विभिन्न वस्तुओं को 80 हजार से एक लाख डालर में नीलाम होने का अनुमान लगाया था।

ख्वाजा के दरबार में रहमान ने की सफाई

ऑस्कर अवार्ड विजेता और संगीत की दुनिया के बेताज बादशाह ए.आर.रहमान ने शनिवार को ख्वाजा गरीब नवाज की पवित्र दरगाह में हाजिरी दी। लेकिन इस बार रहमान अकेले नहीं थे, उनके साथ मौजूद थे फिल्म निर्माता शेखर कपूर। पवित्र दरगाह के दर्शन करने के बाद रहमान ने एक सफाई अभियान की भी शुरूआत की।
दरअसल, पिछली बार जब रहमान अजमेर शरीफ आए थे तो उन्होंने संकल्प लिया था कि वो इस धार्मिक स्थल के आस-पास फैली गंदगी को लेकर एक सफाई अभियान चलाएंगे। इस बार रहमान ने फिल्म मेकर शेखर कपूर के साथ मिलकर ये अभियान शुरू कर दिया। उन्होंने इस अभियान की शुरूआत अन्नासागर झील से की। रहमान की इस पहल ने प्रेरणा का काम किया उन लोगों के लिए, जो इस समस्या से परेशान तो थे लेकिन कभी पहल नहीं कर पाये थे।

राज के साथ परिणय सूत्र में बंधी शिल्पा

महाराष्ट्र के इस पर्वतीय शहर में एक पारिवारिक समारोह में बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री शिल्पा शेट्टी लंदन स्थित व्यवसायी राज कुंद्रा के साथ परिणय सूत्र में बंधी। इस मौके पर शिल्पा ने लाल साडी पहन रखी थीं और हीरों व पन्नों से जडा हार पहन रखा था।

Jasmine Rice Commonplace in Asia

I hate to break anybody's bubble, but jasmine-scented rice is commonplace around Asia and not unique to Thailand. The Thais have been upset over the creation of jasmine-scented "Jazzman" rice in the U.S., but even their nationalistic efforts to protect their famed product failed. And now, according the The Bangkok Post, jasmine rice is grown all over Asia, though the Issan's unique soil and weather may make Thai rice unique. It's something like wine production, so perhaps appellation designations are in the cards.

The gene primarily responsible for the aroma of Hom Mali rice is not unique to Thailand and is found across Asia, according to the world's leading rice research body.

Following the recent local outcry over the US-developed Jazzmen rice strain, scientists from the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute analysed 318 varieties of aromatic rice to "clear up confusuion" about the origin of the aroma gene found in Thai jasmine rice.

All varieties were from the International Rice Genebank, including 16 types of Thai jasmine rice. "Ninety-five per cent of the aromatic rice analysed shared the same version of the major gene for fragrance found in Thai jasmine rice," said Melissa Fitzgerald, grain quality researcher at IRRI. "Our research also suggests that the aroma gene did not originate in Thai jasmine rice."

Traditional varieties of aromatic rice from 17 Asian and Southeast Asian countries - Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam - have the same gene that contributes to their aromatic qualities, Ms Fitzgerald said.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut said last month DNA tests conducted on Jazzman to see if it violated the Hom Mali patent showed it was developed from an "inferior" Chinese strain.

Head of the International Rice Genebank, Ruaraidh Sackville-Hamilton, said any organisation can legally obtain aromatic rice for breeding as long as it followed conditions on sharing laid out in an international treaty.

However, Dr Sackville-Hamilton also added the much-prized fragrant Hom Mali rice was due to more than just genetics. "The unique aroma of Thai jasmine rice is a result of a combination of the presence of the version of the major gene for fragrance, other minor genes, and the climatic and soil conditions in Thailand where Thai Jasmine rice is grown," said Dr Sackville-Hamilton.

"Duplicating exactly this combination of genetic characteristics and growing conditions would be difficult, assuring a place for Thailand's distinctive Jasmine rice in the market."

बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री शिल्पा शेट्टी की शादी उद्योगपति राज कुंद्रा के साथ 22 नवंबर को होने जा रही हैं।

आज यानी 21 नवंबर को शिल्पा शेट्टी के यहां मेहंदी की रस्म आयोजित होने वाली हैं। आज शिल्पा शेट्टी के हाथों में मेहंदी से उनके सपनों के राजकुमार राज कुंद्रा का नाम लिखा जाएगा। मेहंदी की रस्म के लिए खासतौर से रजवाडी मेहंदी तैयार की गई हैं, जिसे लगाने के लिए मशहूर मेहंदी डिजाइनर आएंगे।

दो दिन के मेहमान है कमाल खान

China as 9 Distinct Nations

I'm no China expert, but the sheer size of the country makes it intimidating, to say the least. Better approach it as a collection of various states with distinct topography, history and cultural appeal. That's exactly what Atlantic Monthly did, and it makes sense. The labels are poorly chosen and really don't help with overall navigation, but China as seen as a series of distinct regional entities makes great sense, as described recently in
Shanghaiist.

Anyone who’s been trawling through the China-related web this week will surely have stumbled across the ‘Nine Nations of China’ map that surfaced on Atlantic Monthly. Patrick Chovanec, from Tsinghua University, posted his map amidst the inescapable excitement of Obama’s visit to China, reminding the US President that China is "a mosaic of several distinct regions, each with its own resources, dynamics, and historical character."

The regions Chovanec feels China could be divided into:

■The Frontier, made up of Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Tibet represented the mysterious desert-filled and mountainous bulk China’s land, inhabited by only 6% of its population.

■South of that lies the Shangri-La region of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, a so-called paradise on earth consisting of kaleidoscopic forests, diverse ethnicities and, sadly, a front-door for illicit drugs, as it borders Burma’s Golden Triangle.

■China's Back Door, meanwhile, holds on to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, and Hainan for its lush jungles and economic successes

■... whilst the neatly tucked-away Refuge on Sichuan, Chongqing remains an area with little investment but substantial brain drain.

Chovanec responded later to note that the regional descriptions were his own and that he had cited Skinner, but the citations were edited out by The Atlantic under space considerations.

Muslim Leaders in Indonesia Protest Movie 2012

Everybody has something to say about the movie 2012, including the conservative Muslim Union Indonesia (MUI) political group which feels that only Islam can predict the end of the world. Indonesia Matters has a few words on the subject.

Obscure branches of the MUI have their 15 minutes of fame in protest at the '2012' doomsday movie.

Several regional branches of the Indonesian Ulema Council/Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) have protested at the content of the apocalyptic 2012 movie, claiming it was unsuitable to be viewed by Muslims, because only Allah knew when the world would end, not heathens like the Mayans.

First out of the blocks was Mahmud Zubaidi, the leader of the Malang, East Java MUI, who asked the Information minister Tifatul Sembiring to withdraw 2012 from the nation's movie screens, and said

Only Allah knows when doomsday will come.

Meanwhile in nearby Situbondo MUI members raided several Internet cafes in the area looking to confiscate pirated DVDs of the movie and prevent happy web surfers from downloading it. MUI head in Situbondo, K.H. Abdullah Faqih Gufron, said the movie had upset a lot of people in the town.

In Kalimantan, Prof. H. Asywadie Syukur, Lc, also suggested the government ban the 2012 movie.

I agree with the Malang MUI, East Java, which states that the 2012 movie can mislead the people, especially the Muslims, so the government needs to re-evaluate the permit.

While in Bogor, West Java, primary school students at SD Kemang burned pirated DVD's and posters of 2012 in protest, among other 'spontaneous' and well beat-up by the media pseudo reactions.

Star Wars Storm Trooper Dances in Singapore

Storm Trooper in Singapore is the classic Star Wars Storm Trooper dance routine made famous by Danny Choo, who despite his Chinese name, lives in Tokyo and makes his living as a performance artist. He was recently hired to do his dance schtick in Singapore to promote some kind of product, but it's a sad, sad, sad spectacle as ALL nearby Singaporeans virtually ignore the guy.

Come on, Singapore. Where's your sense of adventure and curiosity? Dead after four decades of totalitarian rule by the PAP? Given up? This would be an amusing and entertaining video clip if only somebody in Singapore had the gumption to give a response.

Sadly, no. Singapore has no soul.

Another Thai Snake in the Thai Snakepit

Would you trust this man to run your country? This is the former general who led the coup that overthrew Thaksin and instituted the ongoing mess which has defined Thailand over the last three years. A snake of a man who has entered the viper's pit, as related by Werewolf's Lair via an editorial in The Bangkok Post. God help the Thais if dangerous psychopaths such as Sonthi are allowed anywhere near a position of power.

Former army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin’s decision to enter politics is no surprise. Speculation about his plans to pursue a political career after retiring from the military three years ago, has been around for a long time.

His announcement on Wednesday only confirms this ambition. If there are any doubts, they pertain to whether his newly chosen path will do the country any good. From the line-up of people who helped build his newly-formed Matubhum Party, his decision could be just an effort to propel himself back into the power game in order to erase his image as the leader of a coup which many see as the cause of the country’s present political crisis.

As the army chief and military coup leader who toppled the Thaksin Shinawatra regime in 2006, Gen Sonthi and the people who helped plot the power seizure failed miserably to fix the country’s problems at the time. In overthrowing the Thaksin government on the pretext that they wished to stop widespread corruption, the military leaders effectively created a new set of problems even harder to solve.

While some people may thank him for helping remove a corrupt regime, the damage from the coup has been more than disastrous. The country is now deeply divided.

The cost in removing the Thaksin government through military intervention, as it appears now, is much higher for the country and the Thai people than allowing the democratic process to take its course. Like it or not, Gen Sonthi will have to admit that he is fully to blame for the agony Thai society is suffering at present.

The continuing power struggle by the people he overthrew three years ago is now undermining not only Thai society and its institutions, but also its diplomatic relations with a neighbouring country.

In announcing his plan to make a foray into politics, Gen Sonthi has made a lot of promises to use his political career to help fix the problems in the country. He says it is his intention to reunite society and restore peace in the deep South.

Although it is still too early to pass judgement on the general’s ideas for solving these two problems, the lack of clarity in his promises makes one wonder how his party will be able to deliver on them. Social disunity and the ongoing violence in the South are two obvious issues which political parties picked up as their campaign platforms in the last general election.

Gen Sonthi appears to be jumping on the bandwagon, yet with less convincing probability that his party will be capable of resolving the situation. Besides a few Muslim former MPs from the deep South, the rest of the party leadership line-up comprises largely of politicians loyal to Vatana Asavahame, who is running away from a 10-year jail term for corruption. The line-up is unlikely to impress anyone that they can put Gen Sonthi’s ideas into practice.

While many may be reluctant to say if Gen Sonthi deserves the chance to prove he can be a good politician, it is now left to the general to convince them through his actions. Gen Sonthi must realise that not many people appreciated his role as coup leader.

The old saying, “Old soldiers never die. They merely fade away,” has always applied to great military leaders. Through his new role as a politician, Gen Sonthi now can choose to be counted among these great military leaders, or be forever remembered as the person who once brought Thai democracy down.

Everyone knows that Singapore enjoys one of the highest incomes in Asia, and yet poverty and homelessness continue to be a fact of life. How could that be? Their retirement program really only covers those citizens who work, pay taxes and contributions into the national retirement fund. The Mystery of Red Bull

Expat at Large in Singapore probes the true origins and ownership of Red Bull and Shark, and comes up more confused than when he read my post about the products and the Full Moon Party on Ko Phangan. Sorry, Expat. And sorry about that photo -- it's the only one I've got on my hard drive. Great research, though.

Note the difference?

So what is going on here? Actually I am not sure, but here is what I can work out so far. Enlightenment is welcomed from those more knowledgeable on this than myself.

Shark is a true competitor of Red Bull I believe, but it is difficult to sort out from the information available on the web who EXACTLY makes (as in manufactures) Shark.

History: both the Thai original of Red Bull, Krating Daeng (Red Guar - looks like a bull IS a bull in my book) and Shark are allegedly based on the health drink Kilane, first created by a chemist in Bangkok over a hundred years ago during a severe crisis of Bangkok Belly.

Osotspa is the Thai company that devolved from the original producers of that drink, but it imports the product they call Shark from Austria: significantly, hmmm? Osotspa also introduced into Thailand Lipovatin, one of the other direct precusors of Red Bull, from Japan in the mid 1960's.

However the Thai drink Red Guar (Bull) is not made by Osotspa but by the Thai company T.C. Pharmaceuticals. Significantly, there is no mention of Red Bull in the Osotspa or Shark websites. T.C. Pharma get 49% of the world-wide sales of Red Bull BTW. Sigh. And they thought they were doing pretty well in Thailand up till that time...

Also there is no information to directly connect Osotspa with now-billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, the Salzburger who took Red Bull from Thailand to the world. He made his deal with T.C. Pharma. Or is it just hidden in a buzz of caffeine, taurine (NOT from bulls' testicles), choline bitartrate and arginine - not to mention all that vodka?

So why is Shark made in Austria, if it is not being churned out by the Red Bull factories?

Is everything joined in one great headachey-spinning conspiracy in this world or what?

The Sad Panda of Wall Street

Since around March this year, a sad-looking panda has been spotted roaming the streets of New York City — on the subway, in Times Square, at various parks and around Wall Street's bull statue. Over the next few months, the Sad Panda has intrigued and fascinated New Yorkers — his short disappearance on Wall Street led a few concerned individuals to put up a missing notice, and his great makeover as Spongebob Squarepants did not go unnoticed.

Turns out this Sad Panda is a 62 year old man from Guangzhou, Chen Jialing, who has now lived in the United States for many years. He confides in journalism student Michelle Tay the story of how he became Sad Panda after being forced to leave his former restaurant job.

YouTube character Gay Carrington is, near as we can tell, a stoner transsexual puppet who occasional chimes in to talk to her fans in Old Hollywood-style English about her moods, pets, and experiences. She posted the above "kaleido-vision" video "while resting up" for her next real video, but we think it's positively brilliant. It stars her cat, Christina "Mooks" Carrington, and as far as stoner YouTubery goes, it's the tops. Enjoy.

Thai Temples' Five Million Baht Toilets

Richard Barrow over at Thai-Blogs visits the famed, expensive temple toilets in Samut Prakan, which also happens to be the world headquarters of the Society for World Domination (i.e. Thai-Blogs). Five million baht toilets? What would the Buddha say?

Toilets in Thailand don't exactly have the best of reputations. They are often dirty, smelly and not well-looked after. They are also nearly always squat toilets. Now comes the news that the temple toilets at Wat Bang Phli Yai Nai in Samut Prakan have recently built a toilet block which rivals any in a five star hotel. The toilets are reported to have cost as much as 5 million baht.

As you enter the toilets, you will find a shoe rack outside for changing your shoes. You then enter through an automatic glass door. Inside it is all air-conditioned. The room is divided into six toilets for women and six for men. In addition there is a separate section with urinals for men. In the middle of the room there is a garden with plants and fountains.

He’s an institution: George, founder and owner of Thaivisa.com, Thailand’s probably most popular website among foreigners with its unique forum. George is the brain behind the success, but success invites envy and jealousy, so not all you read about Thaivisa is milk and honey. I recently had a talk with George and here is what he says about Thailand today, Thaivisa’s sometimes debatable moderators, politics, etc.

George say, how did it all start with Thaivisa?

It was an accident! It started with an experiment with SEO (search engine optimization) in 2002, I wanted to see if a forum like this would be able to reach the top of search results without any cheating (it’s called “white-hat SEO”). As we only had myself and a few friends in the very beginning, we started to ask each other questions and answered each others topics. Most forums actually start this way, even if it does sound a little strange. At that time there were not many Thai related forums around and mostly they covered the bar scene, and we weren’t interested in that and wanted to offer something completely different. I invested a lot of baht in marketing the site during the first three to four years.

You seem to be constantly online. You’re hooked! Can you ever take a day off from your site?

Well, I do try to take days off, but yes, I am hopelessly addicted. However, we have a great team on Thaivisa and I know that it’s in good hands. My normal working day is between 12 and 16 hours per day, a bit less on weekends or when traveling. I went to China for a week recently and had severe withdrawal symptoms. smile.gif I have promised myself to “get a life” soon though.
