Michigan football program is not improving

About seven weeks ago I posted a blog that stated Michigan "was back"...I was wrong...I have no problem admitting when I am wrong and this is one of those times...

I am a loyal Michigan supporter, but the fact is, the Michigan football program has shown no improvement over last year's 3-9 debacle...I attended the Michigan-Penn State game and was totally disheartened by the poor defense and lack of offense...then after watching their performance against a 1-6 Illinois team who was 0-5 in the Big Ten, I am starting to wonder if Rich Rodriguez is the right man to lead the once proud and winning Michigan football program...

As of today, October 31, 2009, the Michigan football program is just an average program...Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and president Mary Sue Coleman need to monitor this situation closely...look at what happened to Nebraska...the Cornhusker administration stayed loyal to Bill Callahan and now the Huskers are just a 6-6 or 7-5 team - at that...through today, Michigan is not even at that level...

In this game against Illinois, Michigan's Ray Roundtree failed to score on a 70 plus yard reception as he got caught on the 1-yard-line...why was Roundtree caught?...for two years I have been drinking the Kool-Aid of Michigan strength coach Mike Barwis...Barwis talks about speed, speed, speed...then why did Roundtree get caught?...

Michigan then had it first and goal on the 1-yard line and could not score on four attempts...once again, where is Barwis and his strength program?...Barwis is nothing but a blowhard...he talks a good game, but since he has been in charge, I have seen nothing different in the players strength and speed than when Lloyd Carr was in charge...Barwis is nothing but a fast talking workout warrior who fooled the Michigan fans for the last 20 months...

As for Rodriguez, for two years I have heard about this potent spread offense...if the spread is a high scoring offense, why did Michigan score only 10 points last week and 13 this week against a 1 win team?...in Carr's last game, Michigan beat Florida who was led by Tim Tebow...since that game, the Michigan football program has plummeted faster than the economy did over that same time period...if Michigan played Florida today, the Wolverines would be crushed...

Michigan is sitting at 5 wins...and in reality, it is 4 wins because one of those victories came against a hapless I-AA Delaware State game...through 9 games, I don't see any improvement from this year's team than I did, through 9 games, of last year's team...I see a team that is struggling to score points and stop points...

Rodriguez has 3 games left - Purdue, at Wisconsin and Ohio State...if he does not beat Purdue next week, Michigan will not make a bowl game for the second straight year...after their performance over the last two weeks, there is no way Michigan is going to win at Madison...and there is no way they are going to beat Ohio State...so basically, Rodriguez's last shot to get in a bowl game will be next week...

The fact is, the Michigan football program is getting worse as the season wears on instead of getting better...that is why the Michigan administration needs to make a decision after the season...these next three weeks may determine Rodriguez's future in Ann Arbor...

तेल डिपो की नहीं बुझी आग, 3 शव और मिले

जयपुर के सीतीपुरा स्थित इंडियन ऑयल कारपोरेशन (आईओसी) डिपो में गुरूवास सायं लगी आग 45 घंटे बाद भी धधक रही है। डिपो क्षेत्र का तपमान 760 डिग्री सेंटीग्रेड पहुंच गया है। इस बीच डिपो टर्मिनल परिसर से शनिवार को तीन और शव बरामद हुए हैं।
इसी के साथ इस हादसे में मृतकों की सख्या बढ़कर आठ पहुंच गई है। जानकार सूत्रों के मुताबिक परिसर में अभी तीन-चार शव और होने चाहिए। आईओसी अधिकारी अब भी अपने दो कर्मचारी लापता बता रहे हैं। इस बीच अप्रत्याशित तापमान बढ़ने के चलते टैंकों के फटने और तेल रिसाव होने की संभावना बढ़ गई है। जिला कलेक्टर कुलदीप रांका ने सवाददाताओं को बताया कि इसके मद्देनजर विशेषज्ञों की सलाह पर प्रशासन ने डिपो के चारों ओर खाई खुदवा दी है, ताकि रिसाव होने की स्थिति में आग का दायरा अधिक क्षेत्र में न फैल सके।

खेतों में मिले डिपो के दस्तावेज
उधर, शनिवार सुबह डिपो से करीब 20 किलोमीटर दूर कुछ गांवों के खेतों में डिपो से संबंधित कई दस्तावेज मिले हैं। इनमें डिपो का आंतरिक नक्शा जैसे महत्वपूर्ण कागजात शामिल हैं। सबसे पहले शनिवार सुबह तितरिया गांवों के लोगों ने वहां सरपंच को खेतों में मिले ये कागजात लेकर सौंपे। सरपंच की सूचना पुलिस, जिला प्रशासन और आईओसी के अधिकारी मौके पर पहुंचे। इस बीच मोहनपुरा, कृष्णपुरा आदि कुछ और गांवो में भी डिपो के कागजात बिखरे होने की जानकारी मिली। पुलिस ने बाद में सभी जगह के कागजात को एकत्रित करवाए। आईओसी अधिकारियों ने उन्हें देखने के बाद बताया कि इनमें से कोई भी महत्वपूर्ण कागजात नहीं हैं। पुलिस महानिरीक्षक बी.एल. सोनी ने बताया कि जिस हालत में ये कागज मिले हैं उससे लगता है कि विस्फोट के कारण ये उ़डकर वहां तक पहुंच गए। उन्होंने बताया कि वहां डिपो के और भी अवशेष मिले हैं। उन्होंने किसी भी साजिश की संभावना से इनकार किया है।

कुर्बान से बडी उम्मीदें लगाए बैठे है सैफ

बॉलीवुड अभिनेता छोटे नवाब यानी सैफ अली खान अपनी आने वाली फिल्म "कुर्बान" को लेकर खासे उत्साहित है। उन्हें उम्मीद है कि फिल्म में करीना के साथ उनकी जोडी दर्शकों पर अपना जादू छोडने में कामयाब होगी। धर्मा प्रोडक्शन की आने वाली सैफ अली खान और करीना कपूर अभिनीत "कुर्बान" एक रोमांटिक-रोमांचक फिल्म हैं। सैफ ने कहा कि फिल्म में करीना और मेरी जोडी कमाल करेंगी।

फिल्म का निर्माण करण जौहर और निर्देशन रेनसिल डिसिल्वा ने किया है। फिल्म में सैफ-करीना के अलावा विवेक ओबेरॉय, दीया मिर्जा, किरण खेर और ओमपुरी नजर आएंगे। यह फिल्म 20 नवंबर को सिनेमाघरों में प्रदर्शित हो रही हैं। मीडिया में आ रही खबरो के अनुसार अपने वास्तविक प्यार का खुला इजहार कर चुके सैफ और करीना ने इस फिल्म में कई गर्मागर्म दृश्य किए है। कहा तो यह भी जा रहा है कि इस फिल्म के जरिये उनके रियल प्यार की गर्माहट को जाना जा सकता हैं।

बिग बॉस से बाहर हुई शर्लिन

कलर्स टीवी के रियलिटी शो बिग बॉस से शर्लिन चोपडा बाहर हो गई। सूत्रों के मुताबिक, शर्लिन पहले दिन से ही बार-बार नॉमिनेट की जा रही है, परंतु किसी न किसी कारण से वे बच जाती थी। लेकिन आखिर में घर के सदस्यों ने उन्हें घर से बेघर कर दिया। खबर है कि विदा होने से पहले शर्लिन खूब रोयी और सबसे अपने व्यवहार के लिए मांफी मांगी। उन्होंने कहा कि मुझे उम्मीद नहीं थीं कि मेरे साथ ऎसा होगा।

उन्होंने कहा कि मैंने सभी के लिए अपनी सोच और व्यवहार में बदलाव किया था। लेकिन सभी घरवालों ने मुझे वोट आउट कर दिया। शर्लिन की विदाई के समय बिग बॉस ने उनको एक सुपर पावर दी और कहा कि आप किसी भी एक प्रतिभागी को एक हफ्ते तक सफाई करने के लिए कहें या किसी एक को जमीन पर पैर न रखने का आदेश सुनाये। शर्लिन ने घरवालों के मर्जी से बिंदु दारा सिंह को सफाई करने का फरमान सुनाया। इसके बाद घर में तमाशा मच गया। बिंदु ने शर्लिन को गालियां दीं और गधी कहा। शर्लिन के इस आदेश से बिंदु का पारा चढ गया और वह कहने लगे कि मैं तुम्हें कभी माफ नहीं करूंगा।

बेबो की चाहत शाहिद

कहते है इंसान अपने पहले प्यार को कभी नहीं भूलता है। करीना कपूर भी उनमें से एक ही। करीन अपने प्यार के बारे में कुछ भी कहने से जरा भी नही हिचकिचाती है। हाल ही में एक एक्सक्लूसिव इंटरव्यू में करीना ने कहा कि, मैं अब शाहिद के टच में नहीं हूं। मैंने और शाहिद ने बहुत ही वंडरफुल रिलेशनशिप एंजॉय किया है। अब हम सिर्फ एक दूसरे को शुभकामनांए ही दे सकते हैं। मैं हमेशा उनके अच्छे भविष्य की कामना करती रहूंगी।

अपने रिश्तों को हमेशा बिंदास तरीके से स्वीकराने वाली बेबो कहती है, हम अभी भी एक दूसरे को शुभकाना संदेश भेजते रहते है। शायद करीना, शाहिद को अभी तक पूरी तरह से भुला नहीं पाई है, तभी तो उन्होंने शाहिद के पापा पंकज कपूर की फिल्म "मौसम" में भी काम करने से मना नहीं किया। उनका कहना था कि, अगर पंकज उन्हें अप्रोच करेंगे तो वे मना नहीं करेंगी। वैसे, सूत्रों के अनुसार बेबो की इस हां की वजह शाहिद के अलावा एक और भी है।

मल्लिका ने कराई होठों की सर्जरी

बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री मल्लिका सहरावत अमेरिका में अपनी आने वाली फिल्म की शूटिंग कर रही हैं।

खबर है कि मल्लिका को हॉलीवुड की किसी फिल्म में काम करने का ऑफर मिला है और मल्लिका उस फिल्म के रोल के लिए खुद को तैयार कर रही हैं। मल्लिका इस फिल्म में काम करने को किस कदर बेकरार है इस बात का अंदाजा इसी से ही लगाया जा सकता है कि मल्लिका ने अपने होटों को और अधिक खूबसूरत बनाने के लिए उनकी सर्जरी करा ली हैं। हालंकि मल्लिका ने इस बारे में औपचारिक तौर पर कुछ नहीं कहा है। अब ये तो मल्लिका ही जाने कि वो उन्होंने अपने होठों की सर्जरी फिल्म के लिए कराई है या किसी और के लिए।

मैं हूं पक्का इडियट: आमिर

आखिरकार बॉलीवुड अभिनेता आमिर खान ने स्वीकार ही लिया कि एक सोशल नेटवर्किग साइट पर वे ही पक्का इडियट नाम से अकाउंट ऑपरेट कर रहे थे। पिछले दिनों जो जानकारियां पक्का इडियट दे रहा था, उसको देखते हुए यह अनुमान लगाया गया था कि ये बंदा और कोई नहीं बल्कि खुद आमिर खान हैं।

आमिर का कहना है कि वे लोगों को बेवकूफ बनाने के लिए ऎसा नहीं कर रहे थे, बल्कि उनका मकसद कुछ और था। वे अपनी पहचान छिपाकर लोगों की राय जानना चाहते थे। लोग उनके सैलिब्रिटी होने के कारण अपने मन की बात को नहीं बताते थे, इसलिए उन्होंने ऎसा किया।

बच्चों को पसंद आएंगी "अलादीन"

समीक्षा: निर्देशक सुजॉय घोष की "अलादीन" फिल्म कम कॉमिक्स ज्यादा है, लिहाजा इसे कॉमिक्स समझकर देखना ज्यादा बेहतर है। कहानी उसी अलादीन, उसके जिन और उसकी तीन इच्छाओं की है, जिसे भारतीय लोग बचपन में सैकडों बार सुन चुके है, लेकिन रूपहले पर्दे पर आते ही कहानी को बुना गया है, और इसे बुनने में एक अदद खलनायक और उसकी बाजीगरी ठूंसी गई हैं। फिल्म के बारे में एक बात साफ कही जा सकती है कि अलादीन बच्चों को लुभाएगी। बच्चों को लुभाने वाले जिन के जादू, नायक की बेवकूफी और हीरो की नाक पकडकर उसे फूला कर गुब्बारा बनने जैसे एनिमेशन बच्चों के बीच अलादीन को लोकप्रिय कर सकते है। लेकिन, फिल्म को गंभीरता से देखने वाले लोगों को फिल्म पसंद आएगी, इसमें संदेह है क्योंकि न तो फिल्म में रोमांस का जोरदार तडका है, और न एक्शन की जबरदस्त डोज। कॉमेडी है, लेकिन उस स्तर की नहीं कि लोग हंस हंसकर पागल हो जाएं। नंगपन की गुंजाइश है भी नहीं, और निर्देशक ने रखी भी नहीं, और न गाने ऎसे है कि जुंबा पर चढ जाएं। तो दो शब्दों में फिल्म सिर्फ बच्चों के लिए है। फिल्म के मुख्य नायक रितेश देशमुख है, लेकिन सही मायने में फिल्म के हीरो अमिताभ बच्चन ही हैं।
फिल्म की कहानी अलादीन चटर्जी (रितेश देशमुख)से शुरू होती है जो अनाथ है और ख्वैश शहर में रहता हैं। अलादीन को बचपन से ही कासिम और उसके गुर्गे लगातार परेशान करते हैं, लेकिन उसकी जिंदगी में जास्मिन (जैक्लीन फर्नाडिस) का प्रवेश होते ही सबकुछ तेजी से बदल जाता हैं। जास्मिन उसे एक जादुई चिराग देती हैं।
जीनियस यानी जेनी (अमिताभ बच्चन) इसी जादुई चिराग का गुलाम है और उसके कहे हर आदेश को उसे मानना पडता हैं। जेनी जल्द से जल्द इस गुलामी से दूर जाना चाहता हैं और इसके लिए वो अलादीन की तीन ख्वाहिशें पूरी करने को भी राजी हैं। अलादीन को इसके लिए तैयार करने के इरादे से जेनी उसके हर काम में टांग अडाने की कोशिश भी करता हैं। अलादीन पहली दो ख्वाहिशें बरबाद कर देता है। लेकिन, तीसरी ख्वाहिश से कहानी में नए मोड आने शुरू होते है। कहानी में रिंगमास्टर (संजय दत्त) की एंट्री होती है और फिल्म का रूख पूरी तरह बदल जाता है। रिंगमास्टर को एक जादुई शीशे के जरिए मालूम होता है कि उसे मारने का काम अलादीन को सौपा गया है, लिहाजा वो अलादीन को खत्म करने के इरादे से पहुंचता है। लेकिन बॉडीगार्ड जिनी से पार पाना भी तो आसान नहीं। फिल्म में रितेश आत्मविश्वासी लगे और अपने किरदार की तरह ही लग रहे है। फिल्म में रितेश की हीरोइन बनी जैक्लीन फर्नाडिस का अभिनय ठीक ही है।
फिल्म में संजय दत्त का किरदार समझने लायक नहीं लगा। फिल्म में जिन्न का किरदार निभा रहे महानायक अमिताभ बच्चन का किरदार बच्चों को शायद पसंद आ जाए। फिल्म में बिग बी के संवाद में कमी लगेगी। फिल्म का गीत संगीत साधारण है। साहिल खान स्टाइल से लेकर अभी तक एक्टिंग में खास परिपक्व नहीं हो पाए है। रमा विज काफी दिनों बाद दिखी है। कुछ किरदारों के होने और उनके उस अंदाज में बिहेव करने का लॉजिक समझ नहीं आता। फिल्म कुछ लंबी है, लिहाजा आखिर में थोडी अखरती है। इसके अलावा एक बात और अखरती है। वो ये पूरी फिल्म में अलादीन के चिराग को लैंप कहा गया है। एक बार भी चिराग कह दिया जाता तो कॉन्वेंट एजुकेटेड बच्चों को लैंप का एक अर्थ चिराग भी कम से कम पता चल जाता।

रैंप पर कैटरीना-रणबीर

बॉलीवुड सितारों के लिए रैंप पर कैटवॉक करना फिल्मों के प्रचार के लिए एक नयाब तरीका बन गया हैं। हाल ही में दीवाली के आसपास प्रदर्शित होने वाली कई फिल्मों के लिए कई कलाकारों ने अपनी फिल्म का प्रचार रैंप पर ही किया था जैसे सलमान खान, अजय देवगन और संजय दत्त। राजधानी में चल रहे "विल्स लाइफस्टाइल इंडिया फैशन वीक (डब्ल्यूआईएफडब्ल्यू)" के पांचवें दिन समापन समारोह में युवा दिलों की धडकन कलाकार रणबीर कपूर और कैटरीना कैफ रैम्प पर उतरे।

ये कलाकार पहली बार रैंप पर नजर आए। दोनों ने "विल्स लाइफस्टाइल इंडिया फैशन वीक" में डिजाइनर रोहित बल की रचना को पेश किया। ये दोनों अपनी 6 नवंबर को प्रदर्शित होने वाली फिल्म "अजब प्रेम की गजब कहानी" का प्रचार करते नजर आएं। रोहित बल के शो में रणबीर क्रीम रंग का शेरवानीनुमा कोट और पायजामा पहनें नजर आए। कैटरीना ने इसी रंग का ट्यूनिक पहना था। शो के दौरान नृत्य के रियलिटी शो इंडियाज गॉट टैलेंट में विजेता रहे उडीसा के प्रिंस नृत्य समूह ने भी प्रस्तुति दी। बल ने अपने संग्रह को "यासास" नाम दिया था।
संस्कृत भाषा के इस शब्द का मतलब है "भव्य"। रोहित ने कहा कि फैशन वीक के ग्रैंड फिनाले में हुआ उनका शो एग्जोटिक इंडिया पर आधारित था जिसमें देश की समृद्ध विरासत की झलक दिखाई गई। उन्होंने कहा मेरे कलेक्शन में सुनहरी चिडिया और सुनहरे मोर पर महत्व दिया गया था। ब्रिटिश काल में भारत को सोने की चिडिया कहा जाता था। कैटरीना ने रोहित के कलेक्शन की सराहना करते हुए कहा रोहित हमेशा से नवोन्मेषी रहे है और कुछ न कुछ नया करते है।
जुनून, निडरता और रचनात्मकता से उन्हें दर्शकों की भरपूर तालियां मिलती हैं। "अजब प्रेम की गजब कहानी" फिल्म के बारे में कैटरीना ने कहा कि प्यार गजब नहीं बल्कि अजब होता हैं। उन्होंने कहा बाहरी लोगों को भले ही यह सामान्य लगे लेकिन एक दूसरे से प्यार करने वाले दो लोगों के लिए यह गजब होता हैं। सुनने में आया है कि निर्देशक राजकुमार संतोषी और सहायक निर्देशक के. राजेश्वर फिल्म के प्रदर्शन के बाद इसका तमिल रीमेक बनाने की योजना बना रहे हैं।

अब नहीं जमेगी "बिग बॉस" में हंसी की महफिल

गजोधर भईया राजू श्रीवास्तव जल्द ही टीवी रियलिटी शो बिग बॉस का घर छोड सकते है। आईएमपीए ने कलर्स को नोटिस भेज दिया हैं। आईएमपीए:- इंडियन मोशन पिक्चर्स एसोसिएशन आईएमपीए टीवी और एंटरटेंमेंट जगत के प्रोड्यूसर्स का एसोसिएशन है। जिसके अंतर्गत सभी प्रसारण मनोरंजन चैनलों और प्रोडक्शन हाउस से जुडी समस्याएं सुलझाई जाती हैं। कलर्स के शो बिग बॉस में भाग लेने वाले राजू श्रीवास्तव का टीवी विजन के साथ तीन साल का करार था जिसके अंतर्गत उन्हें प्रोडक्शन हाउस के साथ महीने में कम से कम दस दिन काम करना जरूरी था। अब जबकि राजू बिग बॉस के घर में है और शो दिसंबर तक चलेगा जिसके चलते वह किसी भी तरह की शूटिंग में भाग नहीं ले सकते हैं। राजू श्रीवास्तव टीवी विजन के साथ किए करार को तोडकर कलर्स के शो बिग बॉस में भाग लिया। नोटिस में कहा गया है कि बिग बॉस में जाने से पहले राजू ने उनसे किसी तरह की इजाजत नहीं ली। ऎसे में ये उनके साथ किए गए कॉन्ट्रैक्ट का उल्लंघन हैं।

नोटिस के मुताबिक बिग बॉस में शामिल होने की वजह से राजू तय समय पर उपलब्ध नहीं हो पाएंगे, जो सीधे तौर पर उस कॉन्ट्रैक्ट का उल्लंघन हैं। जो उन्होंने साइन किया हैं। कॉन्ट्रैक्ट तोडने की वजह से दोनों पक्षों को आर्थिक नुकसान होगा। साथ ही, साख को भी नुकसान पहुंचेगा। ये निजी चैनल बिग बॉस की प्रोड्यूसर कंपनी एंडमॉल को भी इस मामले में घसीट सकता हैं। मामला पेचीदा हैं और राजू इसे हल करने की पुरजोर कोशिश कर रहे हैं। लेकिन अगर बात नहीं बनी तो 31 अक्टूबर तक राजू को बिग बॉस का घर छोडना पड सकता है। अगर ऎसा हुआ तो बिना गजोधर भईया के बिग बॉस का घर बेरौनक हो जाएगा और दर्शकों के साथ-साथ घर में रहने वाले बाकी प्रतियोगियों को हंसाने वाला और कोई न होगा। पिछले दिनों राजू शमिता-तनाज द्वारा अंडरवियर खींचने के मामले को लेकर चर्चा में आए थे।

राखी सावंत के खिलाफ पुलिस शिकायत

अमृतसर के एक लडके ने बॉलीवुड आयटम गर्ल राखी सावंत पर शो "राखी का स्वयंवर" के दौरान उनसे बदतमीजी करने और उनका मजाक उडाने का आरोप लगाते हुए पुलिस शिकायत दर्ज की हैं। अमृतसर के जतिन शर्मा की शिकायत है कि राखी ने न केवल उनका दिल तोडा बल्कि उनका मजाक भी उडाया। जतिन के अनुसार उसने हमेशा कोशिश की कि वह राखी को प्रभावित कर सके, यहां तक हाथ और सीने पर राखी का नाम भी गुदवाया।

राखी ने उसकी दीवानगी देखकर उसे शो पर बुलाया, राखी के बुलावे पर वह मुंबई, दिल्ली और ऋषिकेश तक गया लेकिन उसके हाथ कुछ नहीं लगा। जतिन के मुताबिक राखी ने एसएमएस और ईमेल करके उससे माफी मांगी थीं और अमृतसर आने का वादा किया था लेकिन वह नहीं आई। जतिन ने राखी की दीवानगी में लाखों रूपए खर्च कर दिए और अब वह राखी से उसकी भावनाओं के साथ खिलवाड करने का बदला लेगा। जतिन ने कहा कि वह अभी भी राखी से बहुत प्यार करता हैं।

अपने साथियों का दिल नहीं जीत पाई शेर्लिन

बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री शेर्लिन चोपडा रियलिटी शो "बिग बॉस" के घर में रहने वाले अपने साथियों का दिल नहीं जीत पाई हैं। उनके साथियों को शिकायत है कि शेर्लिन उनसे घुलती-मिलती नहीं हैं। ज्यादा बात नही करती और दूरी बनाकर रखती हैं। लगातार तीसरी बार शेर्लिन को घर से बेदखल करने के लिए चुना गया हैं।

पहली बार शेर्लिन दिवाली के कारण बच गई। दूसरी बार फिर कमाल और शेर्लिन के बीच मुकाबला था, लेकिन कमाल अपनी हरकतों के कारण घर से बेदखल हो गए। इस वजह से शेर्लिन को फिर अवसर मिल गया। हालांकि औपचारिक रूप से अमिताभ बच्चन ने बिग बॉस के घर में रहने वालों से पूछा था कि क्या शेर्लिन को एक मौका मिलना चाहिए।
सभी ने शेर्लिन के सामने एक स्वर में हां कहा था। लेकिन नॉमिनेशन का मौका मिलते ही उन्होंने एक बार फिर शेर्लिन का नाम ले लिया। शेर्लिन का मुकाबला दारासिंह के बेटे विंदू से हैं, जिन्होंने अपनी नॉन स्टॉप बकबक से अपने साथियों के कान पका डाले है। विंदू ज्यादा बोलते है और शेर्लिन कम बोलती है। दोनों ही परिस्थितियों में सभी को शिकायत है।

Cavaliers "buying" a championship?

I live in N.E. Ohio, and as a fan of the New York Yankees, I have always had to listen to the Cleveland fans cry and whine how the Yankees "bought" their championships even though they somehow had amnesia when the Indians "bought" Roberto Alomar, Chuck Finley, Juan Gonzalez, Orel Hershiser, Jack McDowell, etc...but that is for another day...

Anyway, what do the Cleveland fans have to say about their suddenly beloved Cavaliers...during the off-season the Cavaliers went out and acquired one of the biggest names to ever play in the NBA - Shaq - in order to try and win the NBA Championship...personally I do not have a problem with a team acquiring quality talent to try and win a championship...that is good for the fan base when an owner is committed to winning...

My only comment to the Cleveland sports fan - the next time you are ready to open your mouth and complain about the Yankees "buying" their titles, you better look at your own backyard because it looks like the Cavaliers are trying to "buy" a championship too...

Angelina Jolie Thai Tattoo

The story is a bit dated, but I just stumbled across some background news about the tattoo that Angelina Jolie had carved on her back several years ago. The Examiner has the details.

Angelina Jolie, world-class beauty and actress extraordinaire is famous in Thailand but, not as much for acting as she is for choosing a Bangkok tattoo artist to give her two of her many tattoos. Famous Thai tattoo master, Ajarn Noo Kamphai is a past Buddhist monk who gave Angelina Jolie the tattoo in Cambodian script she has on her left shoulder, and the tiger she had tattooed on her lower back the last time she was in Bangkok.

Ajarn Noo Kamphai ('ajarn' meaning 'teacher' in Thai) is actually a practitioner of Thai magic and is especially famous for his tiger tattoos believed to protect the wearer from harm. The tattoos Noo Kamphai tattooed on Angelina Jolie's body are known as sak yan or yantra tattoos in Thailand and are tattoos that are geometrical in design and are made to protect the wearer.

Unfortunately, at this time, Ajarn Noo Kamphai very rarely tattoos people himself anymore, but has one of his four disciples do the actual tattooing instead. He will then bless the tattoos and the wearer, once they are finished.

It's not necessary to visit Ajarn Noo Kamphai though to get a yantra tattoo like Angelina Jolie's. Monks in other temples in Thailand will create tattoos (although technically it's not really acceptable for a monk to do tattoos under Buddhist law in Thailand, many of them still do). If you want a yantra tattoo in Thailand, it's best to come here first and then ask a local the where the best temple to get a yantra tattoo is.

On April 23, 2003 Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood superstar received her first tattoo at Ajan Noo’s samnak. Ms.Jolie, together with 3 giant bodyguards and an interpreter, arrived there when many devotees were awaiting him for the same purpose. The actress decided to drive him to her guesthouse in Bangkok to make the tattoo.

At the guesthouse, Angelina Jolie begged the master to suggest a design. Ajan Noo examined her fortune and occupation and sketched a decoration of five rows of yantra with magic alphabets. It was a pleasant surprise for her when she saw the design.

The great film star asked Ajan Noo about the meaning. He replied “It is the ancient belief that yantra represents a spell on each row. The first row provides charms, the second brings good fortune, the third provides successful job and business, the fourth means her sign of zodiac, the fifth is to gain charisma.” The tattoo would be crafted on her left shoulder. It took about 15 minutes.

Ajan Noo wrapped up that it was a powerful tattoo. The ancient characters related to Phra Sutra. A series of holy writing formed sacred virtues. Devotees would be attractive to those of opposite sex and successful in business. Even enemies would turn to be friends with the tattoo wearer. Angelina Jolie came back again as she had gained all of the benefits from her first tattoo.

After having the first tattoo, Angelina Jolie flew back to Los Angeles immediately that night. She rushed for her performance of the film “ The Beach.”

On April 25, 2003 leading newspapers in Thailand - The Nation, Komchadluek and Thairat – led their morning news with the story that Angelina Jolie had been tattooed in Thailand again by Mr.Sompong or Ajan Noo Kanpai, the tattoo guru of the country.

A crowd of reporters gathered at Ajan Noo’s samnak to find out how the world-famous actress approached him. Besides being a movie star she was also a UN Peace Ambassador. Therefore her unexpected visit to get body decoration here was a great shock to the Thai people. Ajan Noo became a part of Thailand’s recorded history accordingly. It meant his overnight success as a world-famous tattoo master and drew a number of media representatives from various countries – Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Canada, German, Sweden – to his samnak.

Monkeys Mourn

This amazing photo has been going around the net and was featured this morning on a TV news show. The burial of an elderly female monkey was apparently attended by her friends who mostly remained eeriely silent as the monarch was buried in Cameroon.

National Geographic magazine provides the background.

The November issue of National Geographic Magazine features a moving photograph of chimpanzees watching the burial of one of their own. Since it was published, the picture and story have gone viral, turning up on websites and TV shows and in newspapers around the world. For readers who’d like to know more, here’s what I learned as I interviewed the photographer, Monica Szczupider.

On September 23, 2008, Dorothy, a female chimpanzee in her late 40s, died of congestive heart failure. A maternal and beloved figure, Dorothy spent eight years at Cameroon’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, which houses and rehabilitates chimps victimized by habitat loss and the illegal African bushmeat trade.

After a hunter killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a “mascot” to an amusement park in Cameroon. For the next 25 years, she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport. In May 2000, Dorothy—obese from poor diet and lack of exercise—was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. She mothered an orphaned chimp named Bouboule and became a close friend to many others, including Jacky, the group’s alpha male, and Nama, another amusement-park refugee.

Szczupider, who had been a volunteer at the center, told me: “Her presence, and loss, was palpable, and resonated throughout the group. The management at Sanaga-Yong opted to let Dorothy's chimpanzee family witness her burial, so that perhaps they would understand, in their own capacity, that Dorothy would not return. Some chimps displayed aggression while others barked in frustration, but perhaps the most stunning reaction was a recurring, almost tangible silence. If one knows chimpanzees, then one knows that [they] are not [usually] silent creatures."

The Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center was founded in 1999 by veterinarian Sheri Speede (pictured at right, cradling Dorothy’s head; at left is center employee Assou Felix). Operated by IDA-Africa, an NGO, it’s home to 62 chimps who reside in spacious, forested enclosures.

Szczupider had submitted the photograph to “Your Shot,” a magazine feature that encourages readers to send in pictures they have taken. The best are published on the website and in the magazine.

The Boss will be in the house tonight

NEW YORK -- Once he was omnipresent at Yankee Stadium, micromanaging so much that World Series tickets could not be sent out until he revised the seating charts in his office. He raged at his players and celebrated them with equal gusto.

Now George Steinbrenner is 79 and frail. Still the owner but no longer the leader of his beloved Yankees, he saw just three regular-season games this season.

But he's coming back to New York just for the Series, and the Yankees can't wait.

"We're trying to do this for pops, Mr. Steinbrenner," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

George Steinbrenner was missing from the bubbly fueled celebration in the well-appointed clubhouse of the new Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, after the Yankees captured their first American League pennant in six years. He preferred to watch from home in Tampa, Fla.

But he was very much talked about.

His deeds were praised. Toasts were made in his honor.

"It means a tremendous amount to him," son Hank Steinbrenner said Monday. "And then winning the World Series would mean a tremendous amount to him."

Billions of dollars were spent to assemble baseball's priciest collection of talent, and they came from Steinbrenner's bank accounts. After erecting the fanciest ballpark ever seen, at a cost of $1.5 billion, it could even be said that he laid the very foundation for the franchise's latest restoration.

Yet he's been more an absence than a presence at the new stadium, visiting from Florida only for Opening Day, a 10-2 loss to Cleveland. The other games he saw were in Tampa.

He speaks haltingly in public and walks with difficultly following the second of two fainting spells that required hospitalization in December 2003 and October 2006. When he's seen, most often during spring training, he appears withdrawn.

His trademark attire used to be a turtleneck and navy blazer; now it's dark glasses. George Steinbrenner largely has been silenced, at least for Yankees fans.

He's said to easily get emotional in recent years, a wave of sentimentality he fought to suppress during his younger days. Hank Steinbrenner said his father has singled out Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez for special praise.

"This has taken him back 10 years, this team," Hank said. "It's very important to him. It's very special."

Heading a group that bought the team in 1973, Steinbrenner became famous on the back and front pages of New York's tabloids as "The Boss."

He fought with manager Billy Martin and lavished love and money on Reggie Jackson as the Yankees captured two World Series titles in the 1970s. His relationship with the 1990s teams was more tranquil, although losing streaks usually would bring back the old venom. He was a clubhouse presence into 2006, but by the time he attended the 2008 All-Star Game at old Yankee Stadium, he was in a golf cart to deliver the balls for the ceremonial first pitches.

He didn't even go to the final game at the old place, wasn't there to hear Derek Jeter implore fans to "take the memories from this stadium, add it to the new memories that come with the new Yankee Stadium, and continue to pass them on from generation to generation."

And he wasn't there for the most important initial memories from the new ballpark, missing all 15 walk-off wins during the regular season and skipping the playoffs against Minnesota and Los Angeles.

"We want to win this whole thing. We're one step away. We want to do it for my dad." said son Hal Steinbrenner, who was doused by Jeter in the clubhouse. "I know we all feel the same."

Hal Steinbrenner succeeded George as the controlling head last November, becoming the spokesman for the ownership group. Hal hasn't veered far from his father's feared standards, although he delivers them without the lava flood.

"We expect to win the championship. Every year," he said. "It's not going to change."

Cambodia Year Zero Remembered

The Mirror remembers the Killing Fields of Cambodia and the efforts of one reporter to get the story out to the world.

Thirty years ago, the Daily Mirror's John Pilger revealed to the world the horrors of Cambodia.

Two million people had died in Pol Pot's killing fields and hundreds of thousands were starving. Pilger's awardwinning reports warned there was just six months "to save three million people". Mirror readers raised enough money for a plane load of aid, and the reports kickstarted a global humanitarian response. Here he recalls his horrifying trip into a country that had been closed to the outside world for four years.

The aircraft flew low, following the Mekong THE aircraft flew low, following the Mekong River west from Vietnam. Once over Cambodia, what we saw silenced all of us on board. There appeared to be nobody, no movement, not even an animal, as if the great population of Asia had stopped at the border.

Whole villages were empty. Chairs and beds, pots and mats lay in the street, a car on its side, a bent bicycle. Behind fallen power lines lay or sat a single human shadow; it did not move.

From the paddies, tall, wild grass followed straight lines. Fertilised by the remains of thousands upon thousands of men, women and children, these marked common graves in a nation where as many as two million people - or more than a quarter of the population - were "missing".

At the liberation of the Nazi death camp in Belsen in 1945, The Times correspondent wrote: "It is my duty to describe something beyond the imagination of mankind." That was how I felt in 1979 when I entered Cambodia, a country sealed from the outside world for almost four years since "Year Zero".

Year Zero had begun shortly after sunrise on April 17, 1975, when Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge guerrillas entered the capital, Phnom Penh. They wore black and marched in single file along the wide boulevards. At 1pm, they ordered the city be abandoned.

The sick and wounded were forced at gunpoint from their hospital beds; families were separated; the old and disabled fell beside the road. "Don't take anything with you," the men in black ordered. "You will be coming back tomorrow."

Tomorrow never came. An age of owned cars and such "luxuries", anybody who lived in a city or town or had a modern skill, anybody who knew or worked with foreigners, was in grave danger; some were already under sentence of death. Of the Royal Cambodian Ballet company of 500 dancers, perhaps 30 survived. Doctors, nurses, engineers and teachers were starved, or worked to death, or murdered. For me, entering the silent, grey humidity of Phnom Penh was like walking into a city the size of Manchester in the wake of a nuclear cataclysm which had spared only the buildings. There was no power, no drinking water, no shops and no services.

At the railway station trains stood empty. Personal belongings and pieces of clothing fluttered on the platforms, as they fluttered on the mass graves beyond.

Chiang Mai Tourism Woes

Tourism may be down worldwide, but Thailand has been especially hard hit due to political problems, closures of international airports, double pricing scams, taxi ripoffs at the airport, and blatant discrimination against the tens of thousands of expats who call Thailand home. Chiang Mai has been trashed in the tourism field, with record low occupancy levels at the more expensive hotels, and increasing complaints about smog and traffic congestion. Will the upcoming high season be any better? The Bangkok Post looks at the current situation and hopes for the coming months.

Tourism operators in Chiang Mai are desperately hoping for promising business in the coming high season as room reservations by foreign tourists are still very low and trips by local travellers are not enough to offset them.

Reservations in Chiang Mai are still very low for the November-April period as some foreign tourists have delayed their decisions due to the lingering impact of the global recession.

However, the Thai Hotels Association's Northern Chapter expects more local tourists to travel to Chiang Mai when the weather gets cooler. They may plan their trips a week in advance and that should help the local operators to a certain degree by the end of this year.

Kanog Suvannavisutr, the association's president, said it projected an average high-season occupancy rate at 65% at most, compared with 67% in the same period last year. For the latest off-season (May-September), the rate dropped to 36%.

"Apart from the hotel oversupply problem, global economic problems, local political instability and the H1N1 flu are key factors dragging down Chiang Mai tourism," he added.

Mr Kanog said two-star hotels survived with some bookings because their rates were low, not more than 800 baht per night, and thus attracted local tourists and backpackers.

Four-star hotels with conference facilities are also getting some business because conferences are an important market for Chiang Mai. Their room rates are modest, at about 1,500 per night in the low season. The average occupancy of such four-star hotels wa 50%, which is very good for hotels in Chiang Mai.

Meanwhile, five-star hotels are in deep trouble because they cannot compete with four-star ones that offer room rates at almost half the price. Their occupancy is only 20% as a result.

Mr Kanog said hoteliers in Chiang Mai were also facing tough competition from apartments, which draw travellers during the high season, even though the law prohibits apartments from providing accommodation on a daily basis.

"Despite complaints made by hoteliers, apartments still accommodate guests on a daily basis. This is because the fine is small," Mr Kanog said.

In any case, operators hope that the economy will improve next year. The improvement should increase the purchasing power of tourists, especially foreign ones, and they should return to Chiang Mai, he said.

Will BBC Sell Lonely Planet?

As we all know, BBC Worldwide purchased most of Lonely Planet two years ago for a record sum. But things haven't gone smoothly given the economic collapse of the travel industry and hence the travel guidebook industry. The BBC pumped tons of money into the online LP venture, but that hasn't worked out, and LP has posted record losses of the last two years. And many people question whether BBC should be in the business of travel publishing.

Today it was announced that the sale option given to the Wheelers would be extended beyond the Oct. 31 deadline. Will LP be sold back to the Wheelers or put on the open market, where it would surely sell for far less than the BBC purchase price? The Times Online weighs in on the controversy.

It was bought amid a flurry of raised eyebrows and has sat uneasily in a global broadcasting and media stable ever since — and yesterday Lonely Planet was once again the subject of speculation, uncertainty and possibly even a little controversy.

The backpackers’ essential guides to, well, pretty much everywhere may, it seems, be heading back into the uncharted territory of the marketplace, barely two years after BBC Worldwide paid £90 million for the company.

As part of Lonely Planet takeover in October 2007, its founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler, who published their first guide — South East Asia on a Shoestring — 34 years ago, were left with a 25 per cent stake, valued at A$67.3 million before the credit crunch, which they could have sold to the BBC at any time before Saturday.

However, BBC insiders said yesterday that the Wheelers’ put option had been extended, triggering speculation that the broadcaster is preparing to offload the travel publisher, whose original purchase has so damaged its reputation.

Put options normally expire at a fixed date — in this case, October 31 — but the decision to extend its maturity reflects the fact that, according to insiders, the Wheelers want to remain involved in the business and that the situation was not clear-cut. The date of the new deadline was not revealed.

John Whittingdale, MP, who chairs the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, said that he was surprised by the decision to let the Wheelers have more time. “If the Wheelers are not interested in selling, then the BBC should just say: ‘Right, we won’t extend it.’ ”

Mr and Mrs Wheeler began writing the Lonely Planet guides in the 1970s, owning the majority of the company that sprung up over the years. But with retirement looming, the Britons, now based in Australia, chose to sell 75 per cent to Worldwide, the BBC’s commercial division, because they believed that the corporation shared their alternative values. The acquisition rapidly proved controversial for the BBC amid complaints that the licence-fee-backed broadcaster was over-expanding by buying into travel publishing. The Conservative Party has said that it believes the corporation should never have bought Lonely Planet in the first place.

Tony Elliott, the chairman of Time Out, the rival travel publisher, said that he believed the BBC was gearing up to sell the business when it completes a strategy review next year. “I have been told by reliable sources that the BBC will sell Lonely Planet, which is what we have been calling for from day one.”

A BBC spokesman declined to comment on the extension of the £37.7 million option, but indicated that there were no plans to sell the travel publisher. One of the principal objections to any sale is that it would inevitably attract a far lower price, given the collapse in valuations after the credit crunch.

Any sale would also be affected by the publisher’s worsening financial situation. Lonely Planet lost £3.3 million in the first full year of its ownership by BBC Worldwide, significantly worse than the £100,000 loss recorded in the previous year. Investment in the Lonely Planet website partly explained the descent deeper into the red, but the core books division saw its operating income tumble to £300,000 compared with £4.4 million for the six months in the previous year as the recession hit the global travel market.

शोध में उन जोडों का रिश्ता ज्यादा स्थायी पाया गया, जिनमें पति व पत्नी कभी तलाक की स्थिति से नहीं गुजरे थें। प्रमुख शोधकर्ता डॉ. एम्मानुएल फ्रैगि्नएरे ने अध्ययन पर टिप्पणी करते हुए कहा कि महिला और पुरूष प्यार, आकर्षण, पसंद-नापसंद, विचारों, विश्वास और जीवन मूल्यों के आधार पर जीवनसाथी का फैसला करते हैं। अगर, आयु, शैक्षणिक योग्यता और सांस्कृतिक पृष्ठभूमि आदि बातों को भी ध्यान में रखा जाए, तो तलाक के मामलों में काफी हद तक कमी आ सकती हैं।

सुरों की मलिका अनुराधा हुई 55 साल की

संगीत जगत की रानी अनुराधा पौडवाल का आज जन्मदिन हैं। इनका जन्म 27 अक्टूबर 1954 में हुआ था। अनुराधा पौडवाल बॉलीवुड में एक लोकप्रिय गायक के रूप में जानी जाती हैं। वे लता मंगेशकर और आशा भोंसले के बाद प्रमुख पाश्र्व गायिकाओं में से एक हैं। अनुराधा पहली गायिका थी, जो मंगेशकर परिवार के मुकाबले में थीं।

अनुराधा ने अरूण पौडवाल से विवाह किया, जो उनके सहायक के रूप में संगीत निर्देशक एसडी बर्मन के साथ काम कर रहे थे। उन्होंने अपने करियर की शुरूआत 1973 में फिल्म "अभिमान" से की। अनुराधा ने न केवल हिंदी फिल्मों में बल्कि मराठी और गुजराती फिल्मों में भी अपना सुर दिया हैं। उनहें फिल्म "दिल है कि मानता नहीं", "उत्सव", "बेटा" और "आशिकी" के लिए "नेशनल फिल्म फेयर अवॉर्ड" से नवाजा गया हैं।

शाहरूख-सनी में सुलह

पिछले दिनों सुभाष घई की जन्मदिन पार्टी में शिरकत करने कई बॉलीवुड सितारें पहुंचे जिसमें किंग खान और सनी देओल भी शामिल थे। यह बात सब जानते है कि 1996 की फिल्म "डर" की शूटिंग के दौरान शाहरूख और सनी के बीच मतभेद गहरा गए थे और इस वजह से सनी ने शाहरूख और यश चोपडा से बातचीत तक बंद कर दी थीं। लेकिन इस पार्टी में इनके संबंध का नया पहलू देखने को मिला।

पार्टी में शामिल हुए एक सूत्र के अनुसार, शाहरूख सुभाष घई की पार्टी में अपने कुछ दोस्तों के साथ एक तरफ बैठे हुए थे। कुछ देर बाद पार्टी में सनी देओल ने प्रवेश किया। उनका स्वागत करने के साथ ही सुभाष घई सनी को सीधे शाहरूख के पास ले गए और उनका परिचय कराया। सुभाष घई की पहल को समझते हुए शाहरूख और सनी ने गर्मजोशी से हाथ मिलाया और गले मिले। इसके बाद दोनों काफी देर तक प्रसून जोशी के साथ बातचीत करते रहे। अब जब दोनों ने अपने मतभेदों को किनारे करते हुए हाथ मिला लिया है, तो कहा जा सकता है कि उन्होंने यह कदम सोच-समझ कर ही उठाया होगा।

मेघना को भूले लोग

बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री मेघना नायडू फिल्मों से क्या दूर हुई लोग उन्हें भूलने ही लग गए। इसका अंदाजा उन्हें इंदौर में घटी एक घटना से हो गया होगा, जब उनकी जगह दूसरी लडकी को ही मेघना समझ लिया गया। रविवार 25 अक्टूबर को मेघना एक कार्यक्रम में हिस्सा लेने के लिए इंदौर पहुंची।

विमानतल पर उनके स्वागत में कुछ लोग खडे थे। एक लडकी जैसे ही बाहर निकली तो उसकी ओर देख एक व्यक्ति चिल्लाया मेघना आ गई और उसकी तरफ दौड पडा। फिर क्या था वहां मौजूद अनेक लोग उस लडकी के नजदीक पहुंच गए। कैमरे के फ्लैश चमकने लगे। कोई साथ में फोटो निकलवाने की जिद करने लगा तो कोई ऑटोग्राफ मांगने लगा।
आखिरकार एक व्यक्ति ने पहचाना कि यह मेघना नहीं कोई और है। बाद में मेघना आई और उनका स्वागत इस डर से किया गया कि क्या वे ही असली मेघना हैं।

कैटी ने दी जन्मदिन पर अनूठी पार्टी

पॉप गायिका कैटी पेरी के 25वें जन्मदिन पर आयोजित पार्टी में पहुंचे मेहमानों ने एक-दूसरे पर पेंट का छिडकाव किया और सभी मेहमान रंग से तर-बतर हो गए। पार्टी में कैटी के पुरूष मित्र रसेल ब्रांड भी मौजूद थे। सूत्रों के अनुसार पार्टी में पहंचे मेहमान एक-दूसरे पर पेंट डाल रहे थे लेकिन ब्रांड इस सबका ज्यादा आनंद लेते नहीं दिख रहे थे।
पैरी ने अपने मेहमानों को सफेद रंग की पोशाकों में आने के लिए कहा था। पार्टी की थीम थीं, "चार्ली एंड द चॉकलेट फैक्टरी"। लेकिन उन्होंने अपने मेहमानों को नहीं बताया था कि पार्टीKaty Perry, pop singer Katy Perry, Katy Perry birthday, sexy Katy Perry, hot Katy Perry, hot babe Katy Perry में पेंट से खेला जाएगा।

Steve Phillips: another horned dog from ESPN

Another ESPN personality got the can...this time it was baseball analyst Steve Phillips...Phillips had a nice gig going as he was the third man in the booth with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan on Sunday Night Baseball...

But he could not keep his pants up as he was banging a 22-year-old named Brooke Hundley in parking lots (photo above of them) ...the funny thing, back in June I was following her on Twitter...she usually had something interesting to say about ESPN...

Now that Phillips lost his job, he entered a "treatment facility"...what type of treatment facility???...is it an alcohol or drug facility?...the only other facility is a mental hospital...is there such thing as an over-sexed facility?...

Come on, tell us what facility!!!!..

Baseball analyst Steve Phillips was fired by ESPN on Sunday night less than a week after the former Mets general manager admitted having an affair with a production assistant at the cable network.

A representative for Phillips also announced the former Mets general manager was entering a treatment facility "to address his personal issues."

Phillips acknowledged Wednesday he had a relationship with 22-year-old Brooke Hundley.

"Steve Phillips is no longer working for ESPN," network spokesman Josh Krulewitz said in a statement. "His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged, and it became evident it was time to part ways."

Phillips had taken a leave of absence after the affair became public. Krulewitz declined comment when asked Sunday night about Hundley's status with the company.

After Bhumibol? Can Thailand Handle the Crown Prince?

Talk about an explosive situation. Not exactly what Thailand needs at this time. The King has been in the hospital for over a month, and despite upbeat reports from the Palace, his age alone indicates he may be ready to move onto the next level. His son has been appointed his heir to the throne, though most Thais dislike the lifestyle of the Crown Prince and would probably prefer one of his sisters to be the queen. Everyone is jockeying for a position near the King and the Crown Prince, but given the volatile political situation in Thailand, anything could happen.

Gulf Daily News has a summary of the situation, though it's cleaned up for public consumption. When will the King or the international or domestic press start to talk about this looming disaster?

People get long jail sentences in Thailand for criticising the royal family, so the Thai media have been silent on the question of what happens after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

But the king is 81 years old and he has been in hospital for a month now, so there are widespread fears that he is dying. Last week the Bangkok stock market fell by eight per cent in a day on rumours that his health is worse than the palace admits.

Bhumibol has been on the throne for 63 years and he is universally revered. Thailand is three years into the worst political crisis it has seen since it became a more or less democratic country two decades ago, and the king is just about the only unifying and stabilising factor that remains. His death would make matters much worse.

The crisis is the result of democracy. Thailand has become a semi-developed country - average income has risen forty-fold since Bhumibol came to the throne - but most of the population is still rural and quite poor. Their votes used to be bought by powerful local politicians and delivered to whichever urban-based party paid the highest price, but no more.

As the people of the overwhelmingly rural north and north-east acquired more education and sophistication, they started using their votes to back politicians who promised to defend their interests and not just those of the Bangkok-based economic elite. In 2001, they elected a populist politician of humble origins called Thaksin Shinawatra as prime minister.

Thaksin had made a fortune in telecommunications, and he probably couldn't have won the elections if he wasn't rich. But he did govern in the interests of the poor, and he was re-elected with an increased majority in 2005. It was how you would expect a maturing democracy to work, for the poor always outnumber the rich.

But you would also expect a backlash from the traditional ruling elite, and it came in the form of the People's Alliance of Democracy (PAD), a yellow-shirted movement that actually aimed to roll back democracy. By provoking confrontations in the streets with Thaksin's supporters (who took to wearing red shirts), the PAD created a pretext for its allies in the army to seize power in a military coup in 2006. Since then, Thailand has been in permanent crisis.

The PAD's urban, middle-class supporters can control the streets of the capital and even overthrow governments they don't like, but they cannot force the rural majority to abandon its own loyalties. The country is dangerously polarised and politically paralysed - and many Thais believe that only King Bhumibol can hold the country together.

Maybe it's true, although there are suspicions that he actively supported the 2006 coup rather than just acquiescing in it. ( A well-known former journalist, Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, was recently sentenced to 18 years in prison after she suggested in a public speech that the king had backed the coup.) At any rate, the king's death would greatly deepen the crisis, for his likely successor is not loved.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has led a turbulent personal life, including three marriages. His attitude has probably not been improved by living for 57 years in the shadow of his father. He would be a perfectly serviceable constitutional monarch in normal times, but the Thai people have decided, fairly or unfairly, that they do not like him very much.

Vajiralongkorn is so lacking in the respect that has enabled his father to play a mediating, calming role that there are those who quietly suggest that his sister, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, might perform the duties of the monarchy better. It's not impossible. Thai law has been changed to allow women to occupy the throne, and the constitution leaves the final right to designate an heir to the 19-member Privy Council of senior advisors to the king.

They are unlikely to change the succession, but the mere fact that it could happen introduces another element of uncertainty and potential conflict into the equation.

The almost daily reports from the palace on the king's condition are always upbeat, but there have been references to a "lung inflammation," which is a delicate way of saying pneumonia. That is potentially a killer in a man of his age, and the worries of the Thai public are justified. Long live the King!

Fake Viagra in Thailand. No Kidding!

Fake Viagra in Thailand? Sad, but true, most of the Viagra sold in Thailand is fake and doesn't work for the farang horndog. The fake stuff is sold on the streets and from pharmacies which often don't recognize the fakery, so excellent is the packaging. Yes, I've been hoodwinked. The only way to insure you get the authentic item is to visit a doctor and get a prescription, which makes the price almost the same as back home. sigh.

Little is real in Patpong, a glowing bazaar and sex district here in Bangkok. The Gucci is fake, the DVDs are pirated and the go-go girls tell every man he’s handsome.

Drugs too are sold here openly. Not speed or cocaine, but Viagra — or at least diamond-shaped, blue pills that resemble the real thing. After dark, one aging female vendor displays dingy Viagra boxes at her stall to attract customers.

When a man shows interest, she dispatches a teenage runner to retrieve the pills from a secret location nearby. The price: $6 per tablet, $4 cheaper than the average U.S. cost.

“You want it?” asks the runner. “It’s a good price.”

It’s likely too good to be true. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals are widespread in Southeast Asia, sold for cheap on the street or in rural mom-and-pop markets.

Though Viagra is one of the most common knock-offs, it’s much less worrisome than fake meds to fight malaria, tuberculosis and even HIV. They often contain little or no active ingredient. The result: Sickness, fatalities and a host of drug-resistant viruses.

“It might contain the correct active ingredient, but the wrong dose. Or it might contain nothing at all,” said Clemence Gautier, consultant at the Bangkok-based law firm Tilleke & Gibbins. The firm specializes in prosecuting counterfeiters for clients that include pharmaceutical firms Pfizer, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline.

Thai customs police, trained by Tilleke & Gibbins to spot fakes, often set aside boxes of seized goods for the attorneys to inspect and share with clients. Their stash amounts to 3,500-plus knock offs, many of which look astonishingly real.

Along with convincing bottles of Stolichnaya vodka, Casio calculators and even a working motorbike — all counterfeit — raids turn up a lot of fake medicine. The packages of “Throatsil” and faux-Viagra tablets stamped with the letters “VAG” are easy to spot. Many others aren’t.

“The counterfeiters are quite good at what they do,” Gautier says. “All the way down to the holograms on the box.”

The scope of counterfeit meds is difficult to gauge. But the World Health Organization has said that, in the worst-affected parts of Southeast Asia, as many as 30 percent of pharmaceuticals are lacking the stated active ingredient. This covers outright fakes, expired meds and even pills made improperly by well-meaning but barely regulated factories.

About 77 percent of bad meds are produced in China, according to GlaxoSmithKline. Just this week, a Chinese national was arrested in Bangkok with nearly $450,000 worth of Viagra knock-offs and sex toys, which are also illegal to buy or sell in Thailand.

Jeff Altman, a film colorist at Chicago post production house, inherited a bunch of 16mm Kodachrome film that was shot by his grandparents in the 1950’s. One of the reels that he transferred to video was some wonderful footage of San Francisco shot by his grandfather in 1958. The music is “Alone In Kyoto” by Air.

कलर्स टेलीविजन चैनल पर प्रसारित किए जा रहे रियलिटी शो "बिग बॉस-3" को सूचना एवं प्रसारण मंत्रालय ने नोटिस जारी किया है। एक निजी चैनल के मुताबिक निर्माता को जारी नोटिस में कहा कि इसमें अश्लीलता दिखाई जा रही हैं। यह नोटिस राजू श्रीवास्तव मामले में जारी किया गया हैं।
रविवार के शो में राजू श्रीवास्तव टेबल पर खडे होकर डांस कर रहे थे तो शमिता ने उनकी अंडरवियर खींच दी। इस सीन को हालांकि एडिटिंग में धुंधलाकर दिखाया गया लेकिन शमिता की इस बेशर्मी ने सभी को शर्मसार कर दिया। टीआरपी के मुताबिक इस शो में राजू श्रीवास्तव अभी तक सबसे ज्यादा पसंद किए जा रहे है। वे हमेशा अपने हाव-भाव से मौजूद लोगों का एंटरटेनमेंट करते रहते है। सबसे बडी बात यह है कि राजू श्रीवास्तव और कमाल खान के बीच हुए गाली-गलौच में राजू ने एक भी गाली नहीं दी। इससे यह साफ होता है कि इस शो में राजू अपना दावा सबसे मजबूत करना चाहते है। लेकिन इस घटना ने राजू को भी कटघरे में लाकर खडा कर दिया हैं।

प्लेबॉय के लिए न्यूड होगी क्रूपा

मॉडल एक्ट्रेस जोआना क्रूपा प्लेबॉय मैगजीन के लिए न्यूड होने की तैयारी में हैं। खुद क्रूपा ने भी इस बात को कबूल किया है कि वह स्टार मैगजीन प्लेबॉय के दिसंबर अंक में न्यूड नजर आएंगी। मैन्स मैगजीन प्लेबॉय के लिए क्रूपा ने खास फोटो शूट किया हैं। हालांकि इस फोटो शूट को काफी गुप्त रखा गया था।

इससे पहले 2005 में कू्रपा प्लेबॉय मैगजीन द्वारा सेक्सिएस्ट स्विम सूट मॉडल इन वल्र्ड का खिताब पा चुकी हैं। इस तरह न्यूड होना क्रूपा के लिए कोई नई बात नहीं हैं। फिलहाल वह अपने एलबम "डांसिंग विथ द स्टार" में काफी व्यस्त हैं जिसमें वह कोरियोग्राफर डेरेक हग के साथ काम कर रही हैं। पिछले दिनों क्रूपा ने विवादास्पद बयान दिया था कि इस डांसिंग सो में पार्टिसिपेट करने से उसकी सेक्स लाइफ प्रभावित हुई हैं। उसे रिहर्सल करने के अलावा किसी भी चीज के लिए टाइम ही नहीं मिल रहा। वह मानसिक तौर पर बीमार हो गई हैं और शारीरिक तौर पर थक गई हैं।

दुखी है सेलिना

दिवाली गुजर गई, लेकिन बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री सेलिना जेटली की उदासी अब तक दूर नही हुई। दरअसल सेलिना की यह पांचवी ऎसी दिवाली है, जब वे अपने परिवार से दूर रहीं। दिवाली के समय वे थाईलैंड में गोविंदा, सुनील शेट्टी और ईशा देओल के साथ फिल्म "चाय गरम" की शूटिंग कर रही थीं।
इस वजह से उनका दुखी होना स्वाभाविक हैं। अपने घर को मिस करने वाली सेलिना का कहना है कि पिछले वर्ष वे दक्षिण अफ्रीका में फिल्म "गोलमाल रिटर्न" को प्रमोट करने में व्यस्त थीं और इस वर्ष शूटिंग में। वे कहती है कि इतने महत्वपूर्ण त्यौहार पर परिवार के साथ नहीं रहने का मुझे दुख हैं। लेकिन फिल्म इंडस्ट्री मेरा दूसरा परिवार हैं। मैंने अपने साथियों के साथ ही दिवाली मनाई। हां, मॉम, डैड और भाई को मिस किया।

बॉलीवुड में प्रीति की वापसी

आईपीएल में अपनी टीम की हार और नेस वाडिया से अलगाव से बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री प्रीति जिंटा बुरी तरह हिल गई थीं। कुछ महीने उन्होंने भारत के बाहर बिताए। नई ताजगी के साथ एक बार फिर वे बॉलीवुड लौटी है और फिल्मों में अपनी नई शुरूआत के लिए तैयार हैं।

नेस वाडिया के प्यार और क्रिकेट के चक्कर में प्रीति फिल्मों को लगभग भूला ही बैठी थीं। उसके बाद वे लंबे समय के लिए विदेश चली गई। लोगों को लगा कि अब प्रीति अभिनय नहीं करना चाहती है और शादी कर विदेश में ही बसना चाहती हैं। प्रीति का कहना है कि लंबे समय से उन्होंने ब्रेक नहीं लिया था, इसलिए वे विदेश चली गई थीं। अब वे तरोताजा महसूस कर रही हैं और नई फिल्मों की स्क्रिप्ट सुन रही हैं। उनके अनुसार उनको लेकर जल्दी ही कुछ फिल्मों की घोषणा होने वाली हैं। गौरतलब है कि हालिया प्रदर्शित फिल्म "मैं और मिसेज खन्ना" में प्रीति ने एक आइटम सॉन्ग किया था।
